bggalaxy
My wife and I love old and new romantic comedies. I'm not sure how to ask this question but here it goes. We are looking for movies in this vein that are not on the "favorites list" or "popular". Some of the examples we like the "popular" ones are. Bring up Baby, Vivacious Lady, My Man Godfrey, Ball of Fire, heck anything that Grant, Hepburn, Tracy, Rogers, Stewart, Dunne, Astaire, Stanwyck have been in. Some later stuff we enjoy are You've got Mail, The Sure Thing, Roxanne, etc. I guess if there are old movies out there that fit this mold that you think we would like to check out - please post. One movie that was past on to us that we enjoyed was It Started With Eve (1940) an other was Book of Love (1990). Thank you
path40a
Though you may have already seen many of these if you have been watching TCM for a long time, I've found that the Ernst Lubitsch & Preston Sturges films are almost without exception delightful romantic comedies. I "cut my teeth" watching the Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, and James Stewart romantic comedies, but only just "discovered" these Lubitsch's and Sturges's gems once I started watching TCM. There are still several I have yet to see, but will be watching for them to air in the future "right here";-)
bggalaxy
Thanks for the info. i looked up these films and some look like they'll fit the bill. I was pleased to see films there I already consider favorites. "Remember the Night" and "Easy Living" to name a couple. If Sturges' other stuff can compare - great! moviebuffjg
I would strongly recommend "The More the Merrier" with Jean Arthur and Joel McCrae (one of the funniest movies of the period). You may also want to check out "Only Angels Have Wings," although it's not necessarily a comedy (though it does have funny moments). Since you like Hepburn and Tracy, you may enjoy "Without Love". It co-stars Lucille Ball (who practically steals the movie she's so funny). "Stage Door" is another one with Hepburn, though it is a little more popular and you may have seen it. Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball both co-star and they are truly fantastic. Rapid, witty dialogue. Finally, and a little more recent (mid-70's), is "Robin and Marian" starring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. Truly funny to watch a tired, aging Robin Hood look up Maid Marian (who's become a nun) only to hear Marian say, "What the hell do you want?" sandykaypax
I like THE MORE THE MERRIER, too. Another good one with Joel McCrae is THE PALM BEACH STORY. It's more of a screwball comedy with Claudette Colbert--very fun.
