Week-End in Havana (1941)

Cinemascope

Recommended Posts

A great Technicolor musical to watch any time, but perhaps even more so in the winter season, this colorful Alice Faye starrer also features nice performances by Cesar Romero, John Payne and the incomparable Carmen Miranda.

There's a good audio soundtrack in the DVD by film historian Jeanine Basinger, who comments among other things on the irony that Carmen Miranda is much better known today than AF, although AF was one of her era's top musical stars.

Not much in the way in the way of other extras, just a few trailers. Still a good rental.

One thing I forgot to mention that's of course a big draw about this picture is that even though it was (not surprisingly) filmed mostly on a soundstage, it does have some footage of Cuba in the early 40's. It's such a pleasant surprise to see the way Cuba used to be, as it's usually mostly shown after 1959. :(
