Fedya
> Short Film Schedule Aug 22-24, 2007 [...] > 8/22 4:18am/1:18a - The Emergency Case > 1930-10m-comedy I'd use the word "comedy" advisedly. This is one of those early talkies where the studios were trying to figure out what to do now that they could put sound in the movies, and the result falls really, really flat. Why couldn't they dig out The Hard Guy (1930) instead? At least that's got Spencer Tracy. [...] > 8/23 5:43am/2:43a - King of the Duplicators > 1968-12m-doc (make up artist William Tuttle) Oooh, this is an interesting one.

Yes, especially in light of his passing away last month at age 95. It's a good time for TCM to repeat this short. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/02/AR2007080202292.html
Factotum
"EMERGENCY CASE" starring rightly forgotten Hugh Cameron, was indeed a terrible excuse for comedy. But by late 1930, sound was not a new or experimental thing. The kings of Comedy, Mack Sennett and Hal Roach, had been putting out talkie sshort subjects since 1928 and 29 respectively, Fox, Educational, Pathe and Paramount were producing their own as well, and Vitaphone had been churning out one reelers by the hundreds since 1926. It was just a very poor film, with all-unfunny gags.
