DAYS 331--332

Hannah Arendt was a German-born Jew who escaped in 1933 from Gestapo persecution in the Third Reich.

Stripped of her German citizenship in 1937, she became an American citizen in 1950.

She received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Heidelberg in 1929. In 1959 she was named the first female lecturer at Princeton.

In " The Origins of Totalitarianism" , Ms Arendt proposes that both Communism and Nazism applied terror to subjugate mass populations, rather than just political adversaries-- "a novel form of government" built on terror and ideological fiction.

Totalitarian regimes are often alike with the brutal methods they use. In Nixon in China, Adams explains the use of terror like you mentioned.

>Mao: We've more than once led the right wing forward While textbook cadres swung back into goose-step, Home at last. How your most rigid theorist revises as he goes along!

A week from today, hours after delivering a massive, unfunded handout to corporations sitting on $2.3 trillion in cash, GOP might shut down the government because providing care for low-income kids would bankrupt us.
