Listening to the DVD commentary for " The Seventh Victim " I shocked to hear that Jean Brooks died in 1963. That year had to be about the first time that I saw Victim on TV, local TV Ch. 7 showed RKO films every late night. I'm sure that my earliest " Filmgoers Companion ", purchased in 1965 showed that she was still alive. The latests edition, that I own ( # 15 ) does list her death in '63. I have owned many other editions of the late Mr. Halliwell's magnificent opus, but somehow I missed her death or it wasn't listed. I thought that she was an excellent actress and very, very attractive. Jean was born in 1916.

Miss Gun For Hire -- Thanks for the introduction to Ella Raines. Now I know what all the fuss is about. She has killer eyes.

I love all the photos you have posted here. Excellent selections.

Your recent Veronica Lake pic makes me wanna sing for some reason:

Have you ever seen a lovelight, in a lady's eye

And then suddenly, watch it vanish away

If there's trouble in your love life

Well, my friend, get wise

For as we magicians would say...

Now you see it, now you don't

Because hocus pocus, allakhazam

That's love

That's love

Try to kiss her

First she won't

And then presto change-o, fiddle dee dee

You're hand... in glove

One moment, she's making you see canaries in the air

Next moment, instead of her heart, the ace of spades is there

Now you see it, now you don't

Because hocus pocus, lo' and behold

You got blinded by that moon of bright gold above

That's love

Now you see it, now you don't

Because hocus pocus, lo' and behold

You got blinded by that moon of bright gold above

That's love

I like those lyrics, Frank---who's the singer, what's the song? Sounds like the songwriter figured out the truth about women. Which is that no man can ever figure on finding out the truth about women.

I think Veronica was not so much an actress-as-femme fatale, as she was a perfect canvas onto which you can project all your ideas of what femme fatale can be.

Frank, I've always loved that song Veronica sings in the nighclub (as sweaty Laird Cregar is palpating with lust for her) and always remembered the catchy tune, but not the lyrics. And you've posted them for us all to enjoy.

Much thanks.

BronxGirl -- It's always great to see you lounging here at the noir nightclub. Horror babes are more than welcome. You actually may feel rather comfortable around here since many of the guys turn into zombies.

I'm glad you liked the lyrics from "Now You See It, Now You Don't." I'm going to post the lyrics to Veronica's other song ("I've Got You") in *This Gun for Hire* below, but I have to speak to a particular lady first. By the way, Martha Mears is credited with singing both songs.

Nightwalker -- Nice catch. Your name surely fits this forum.

Miss Torch Singer -- I see you are out of practice. Well, you've got the next number. Throw on this fishing outfit and knock 'em dead, kid.

I've got you, right where I wanted you, dangling on my line

I've got you, and I'm enjoying it fine

You had me, right where you wanted me, that's the way I learned

You had me, ahh, but the tables have turned

I was one out of fifty in your address book

Ohh, what a spot you had me in

But today you're the sucker for the shiny hook

And you'll never wriggle off, you can bet your bottom fin

I've got you, right where I wanted you, dangling on my line

I've got you, and I'm enjoying it fine

'Cuz I'm not yours anymore... you're mine

'Cuz I'm not yours... you're mine

Another image from *On Dangerous Ground* . Playing one of those nameless but affecting denizens of noir, young *Cleo Moore* has her biggest screen moment as the underage saloon customer, who may or may not be a prostitute.
