FrankGrimes
They did so for everyone last year, silly gander, but it's still special whenever a Vivien film shows up. So long as it's not one in particular. Grace Jones, Gene Simmons and Gloria Allred? You're cruel! Her Twelve Men better be good or Sweet T is going to pay. FrankGrimes
That would be a good one for you and she to discuss. I guess Greer plays a tramp in Her Twelve Men. She couldn't ruin just one man's life, she had to ruin twelve. Hmmmmm, I wonder which Double G I will like with Robert more?

HollywoodGolightly
In addition to the movies that have already been mentioned, TCM is also showing Samuel Fuller's House of Bamboo on Nov. 8.
HollywoodGolightly
The most likely reason is just a problem with rights issues. At least that one is available on video.

I believe it was recently released on DVD in a Literary Classics collection.
ChiO
TCM is also showing *The Naked Spur* -- which at least one person considers his favorite Western -- in November. Yes, November is shaping up nicely.

Yes, November is shaping up nicely. I wonder who that mysterious "person" can be. I'm a bit hazy on recollecting...I know I've seen them around somewhere...in a dark alley no doubt. ChiO
Hey, my two favorite actors directed by my favorite director of Westerns...what's not to like? Yes, you are correct. It would be perfection if Timothy Carey were in it.

CineMaven
There won't be a shred of empathy at twelve noon for the quiet man when Robert Ryan works his menacing magic in "CROSSFIRE." Luckily for our glorious GloLo, she won't have to face the Ryan that Mitchum and Young will deal with. In view of the discussion going on about his performance in "On Dangerous Ground" I'm hoping Double G fans will forgive me that I may concentrate on Ryan this time around. Shucks! I've got thirteen other films to check her out in. But you know what I'm most looking forward to? From 8:00pm on...when Robert O. does those intros and outros on Gloria Grahame. OOoohhh, the interesting tidbits he'll have to tell us.
audreyforever
I am very much waiting for Robert O's tidbits tonight. Can't wait for the Big Heat at 9:45. What an Awesome film! I am Getting ready for Robert Ryan in Crossfire soon. He was a very underrated actor.

All the time I had what you and Jackie wrote about the film in my head and it really added to my appreciation. I am not sure I would have picked up half those things on my own. Jackie---I really noticed and felt the Lewton influence just as you say...it was particularly strong when at the end, Stoker is trying to get out of "Paradise" (Paradise Lost?) and he's racing around, rattling doors---like a rat rattling his cage. And the arena does look like a maze and a clock! So cool. I really felt bad for Julie...she deserves a real home and a better life and I can almost feel the exact same sense of relief she does at the end... I'm thankful to you all for raising my appreciation for this movie. But I still had to turn away and fast forward the worst of the beating...I mean fight scenes. Why do boxing films have to have so much fighting in them?

And the > arena does look like a maze and a clock! So cool. Oooh, I never thought about the physical act of "getting _out_ of Paradise".... I only thought he was trying to _find_ Paradise. That's good. He thought Paradise was there, winning the big one, the payoff - but really, it's with Julie....much simpler.... he comes to appreciate what he has instead of dreaming about that big fight....once he's had the big one, he realizes how shallow the "victory" really is. I love that "rat rattling in his cage".... that was a super, _perfect_ description.... > I really felt bad for Julie...she deserves a real home and a better life and I can > almost feel the exact same sense of relief she does at the end... I agree. You can't help feeling the relief that it's over..... and they managed to make it out alive. > > But I still had to turn away and fast forward the worst of the beating...I mean > fight scenes. Why do boxing films have to have so much fighting in them? I thought the boxing sequences were so interesting, because they start out like this: and slowly work their way to this: which somehow made me think of this: The more violent a situation is, the closer we get, until it almost hurts us to look, because we are right inside it. JackFavell
MissG- I just went back to your amazing first post in this thread..... which lead me to the hillebrander website. This quote leaped out at me: By the mid-Fifties Ryan had become disillusioned with the film industry: "When I first went to Hollywood, I thought all I wanted to be was a movie star. Then, when I became one, I realized it wasn't all it was cracked up to be." Somehow, he was able to turn that into his performance in The Set Up. And this quote made me laugh out loud: "Generally, I'm fated to work in faraway, desolate places. As I said to Cary Grant one time - I told him how much I envied him because as the suave, charming, gifted man he is, he makes all his pictures in places like Monte Carlo, London, Paris, the French Riviera, and I make mine in deserts with a dirty shirt and a two day growth of beard and bad food. But that's an act of birth. As I said, I get all the worst locations because of the way I look."
