MissGoddess
Hi Chris! I've never seen *Run for Cover* but I like Cagney out west so I'm proper curious. It would be neat if TCM is showing some of these oaters in their salute; I'll have to check the schedule. I'd like to get *Tribute to a Bad Man* recorded. movieman1957
No listing for it yet. Was it you that asked about "The Time of Your Life"? It is on the 30th/31st at 3:45am ET. Thanks for the picture on Boone. I always knew as a first class thug in the movies. (The Tall T, Hombre, Big Jake, The Shootist) but it's been nice to get a different look at him in "Have Gun - Will Travel."
MissGoddess
Hi Chris! Yes it was me, thanks for letting me know! I can't wait to see that Cagney movie. I'm dying to see Richard Boone's first series, "Medic"...have you seen it? He played a good guy doctor in one movie that starred, I believe, Eleanor Parker, in which he was the shrink counseling her and she had multiple personalities. I remember being shocked at seeing him play a cultured, contemporary man! Ha! Which he was (cultured & contemporary, I mean). That's why I'm really curious to see "Medic" because I bet he's very good. He reminds me a little of Robert Ryan in that I prefer them in straight leading roles because of the extra ruggedness and "edge" they bring. It's almost too easy to see them as a villain. I'm still not crazy about the shows themselves in "Have Gun Will Travel", though I love his character. I was distracted while watching them so maybe I need to give it another chance. movieman1957
I have not seen "Medic" but it is available through Netflix. I got "The Time of Your Life" in a box set of leading men movies. Most of them were early films. Gable had "Painted Desert", Cooper had "A Farewell to Arms and I think Bogart's was "Beat THe Devil" and there were some others that I don't recall but they were off the beaten path titles. lzcutter
Chris, Do you remember him as Hec Ramsey on the old NBC Mystery Movie series. The Sunday evening hub consisted of Banacek, Madigan (Richard Widmark but without Henry Fonda who had co-starred in the TV movie) and Cool Million with James Farentino. NBC also had one on Wednesdays evenings that consisted of McMillan and Wife, McCloud and Columbo). Hec Ramsey joined the Wednesday evening hub. Anyways, Boone played an older retired lawman, Hec Ramsey and some young whippersnapper, Richard Lenz, played the new lawman who was fascinated by the forensics of the job such as fingerprinting. It was produced by Jack Webb's Mark VII productions. It only lasted maybe one season but I carry the memory of it around in my head. Message was edited by: lzcutter because it wasn't on both hubs. Clarity, I need clarity.
MissGoddess
Oooh, "Medic" is on Netflix! That's wonderful! That box set sounds great---I really like *Beat the Devil* especially and I haven't seen it in ages.

MissGoddess
Hi Lynn---I saw that "Banacek" was available on Netflix and never having seen it I put it in my queue. Looks to me like TV used to be WAY more interesting.
movieman1957
Lynn: I don't remember "Hec Ramsey." I do remember the others but they may be because they ran longer. Jack Webb was close to being the Dick Wolf (Law & Order) of his day. I remember that hand at the end of many shows. Maybe only rivaled (and a bit earlier) by Quinn Martin. Bronxgirl48
Hi, Miss G. - Terrific THE OKLAHOMA KID and THE TALL MEN posters -- love them, thanks so much! That cowboy hat seems bigger than Jimmy. Yeah, those Russell boots. Just like Shirley's "Shut up and deal". And you know what? Robert didn't immediately scare me in THE TALL MEN -- he actually seemed less intimidating for some reason. And he really has lot of sex appeal which I'm ashamed to say I hadn't always noticed. FrankGrimes
Hiya, Fordy Guns! -- I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts on the first season of Gunsmoke. You have most certainly increased my want to own the DVD. Dodge was definitely more "civilized" in the later end of the series and had acquired a more settled, quasi-respectable fascade compared to how wild it is here. Boot Hill is always present in the monologues which open each episode, reminding you how almost daily a new "tenant" was added. That's very interesting. I like how the show starts off with a wild, unsettled Dodge. It tells me the town and show mature together. That's how it should be, too. There is a stark contrast present (in Season I) which seems to have blurred by the series end (the shows I've always seen). A push and pull between rough justice and compassion for what made the people so hard and harsh and its primarily depicted in the Marshall's own conflicting reactions. He's very, very young so of course he's more spry and quick tempered, in fact, it's a bit jarring to see Matt Dillon become really SCARY when he's mad----and then there are other scenes where he's so much more patient than he ever was in the later years (too patient for me, sometimes). It's an odd contradiction. That's also very interesting to me and quite realistic. A young man will often be less aware of just how and when to act in different situations. It makes all the sense in the world to me that Matt would be more quick-tempered but also too patient (forgiving) at other times. He's in the process of learning how to be a marshal... and a man. P.S. Boy howdy, they make NO bones about the prostitution going on in the saloons. To me it's more patent than even many feature length movies made it. You vile DVD temptress. Talk about a selling point for me. You're bad. Howdy, Prairie Flower! -- And you know what? Robert didn't immediately scare me in THE TALL MEN -- he actually seemed less intimidating for some reason. And he really has lot of sex appeal which I'm ashamed to say I hadn't always noticed. Uh-oh. It looks like somebody is ready to bloom. Double R does have that effect on gals. MissGoddess
Re: THE TALL T: you have Richard Boone to look forward to in that one. I'm keeping my eye on the Western Channel line-up and as soon as it looms on the horizon I will probably add it to my Cable package. Lately they've been showing too many 90s westerns for my taste, mixed with the 50s movies and only a couple of western TV shows.
MissGoddess
I think you'd really enjoy the Season I dvd, I became quite hooked on it and couldn't help but watch all the dvds before I moved onto other titles. This is going to hurt: I know you're right. Pain! Your review on the DVD has convinced me of this. It sounds like Gunsmoke like I've never seen it before. By the way, how did Elke like the season? I may spring for Season II in a few weeks. Watch yourself, Have Gun will Travel.
Bronxgirl48
Whoa! Move over, Missy, I'll take your place next to Robert! Thank you! It's worth it to have the Western Channel cause you never know what gems will pop up.
MissGoddess
OK I sprang for "Gunsmoke" Season II --- but it says it's only "Volume 1"....does that mean the seasons were even longer or that they are only giving me half the number of discs for the same price? Sounds like something's stinky in Dodge... I sent off Season I to my Mom (after carefully examining each disc for quality assurance) so she should have it in a day or two. I'll have to ask her what other western shows she likes. I know she loved *The High Chaparral* but that one is hard to get a hold of. I also ordered *Gladiator* for her because she's never seen it and I think it's something she'd enjoy (she loves ancient history and I love russell crowe so we're both happy). MissGoddess
I forgot to mention in my review of the first season of "Gunsmoke" was how much I like the character of "Chester". This is the first time I've seen him, having heard so much about him. I wasn't sure if I'd like him because I like "Festus" so much but I do only in a different way. Chester is really sweet and gentle and Dennis Weaver is just a brilliant actor the way he brings out these qualities, not to mention his very touching attachment to "Mr Dillon". I love how he calls him "Mister" even though they seem roughly the same age. He says it with so much respect. The affection between Matt, Chester, Doc and Kitty is very strong from the beginning. Does anyone know if any of the shows or tv movies ever depicted Matt's actual first arrival in Dodge and how they all became friends? I only remember the three-part episode in which Kitty talks at length about how she first saw Matt but I never saw any "flash back" shows. I'd love to see that. movieman1957
The later TV movies didn't really go that far back. The first TV movie (I know of) "Return to Dodge" did use an old episode that carried the story and edited scenes fr om the epsiode into the movie. It wasn't too long after that one that Amanda Blake died. You might have to go back to the radio days to get that story. After all it had been on radio for a few years before it came to TV. The radio show even overalapped the TV show for several years.
