FrankGrimes
This does have your fingerprints all over it, Mr. Grimes. I thought I wiped the slime clean! BTW - I found out I can "celebrate" Grace Kelly Month by posting images from her films that don't include one image of her. So don't tempt me. No! I'll tell on you for breaking the Code of Misconduct!
lzcutter
Wow Chief, A seventy year old movie poster gets deleted for nudity in a thread devoted to movie posters? I think some of us can certainly tell which way the winds are blowing here at TCM City. Holly, This has to be first, you missing a poster that Kyle put up. You are usually one of the first to comment. "A slippery slope"? I could understand if this was in the General Discussion forum or even Hot Topics where it would be more likely to be seen by the handful of teens who post here. But this is the Favorites Forum and the people who enjoy this thread actively seek it out. It has a devout, adult following. There have been nude photos (actual photos, not drawings) posted in Mongo's *Candids* thread as well as some of the other threads in the main forums without deletions. All I see is a double standard at work in a popular thread. Edited by: lzcutter on Oct 13, 2009 9:27 AM

lzcutter
*I missed a dirty poster??* No, you missed a foreign poster for *Ecstacy*, there was nothing dirty about it unless you think a drawing of female nudity is dirty.

ADDIE
That is a beatitully drawn poster, but I would be more annoyed about the censorship if it had been of an attractive, naked man But whom-so-ever, you just stop oppresssing Kyle, right now! hlywdkjk
Good Evening Everyone - (A Multiple Members Reply) *"But whom-so-ever, you just stop oppresssing Kyle, right now!"* - ADDIE Hi ADDIE. Glad you weren't offended with the image. Just so you know, I don't feel oppressed, harrassed or angry by the poster deletion. Just insulted mostly. If it happens to another image in the future, I will post a link instead - just like today. Because I really like the upcoming *Piccadilly* poster. *"...thought it a beautiful piece of artwork."* - mr6666 Me too. And I thought everyone would see it as "art"-work too. I'm happy you took the time to look for yourself. *"C'mon now, you didn't really think Uncle Joe was going to let that one through!"* - sineast Only if I (or others) thought it was an image of Betty-Jo after leaving the Hooterville Water Tower. *"All I see is a double standard at work in a popular thread."* - lzcutter I don't hold to any conspiracy ideas or other motivation on the part of WebAdmin - or by members who may have registered a complaint about the image. Funny how the first image for *Ecstasy* is still "up" though. I guess for some folks, "the devil _is_ in the 'details' ". *"How depressing. People can be so frustrating."* - Minya Cheer up, "mlle". The Gallery goes on. And I wear the "Censored" label with honor. If you want one too, just post some some of the motion studies from pioneer filmmaker Edward Muybridge in these Forums. They're not even "pen and ink" but photographic! *"I'm shocked, shocked to find that 70 year old posters are being displayed here....."* - JackFavell I'm "shocked" that TCM can show the film *Ecstasy* with its infamous nude scenes of Hedy Lamarr intact but the TCM Forums can't display a drawn representation of that nudity. TCM didn't show the film to be prurient or provocative - and I didn't post the image of the poster for that film for those reasons either. But I believe having that image removed infers that I was acting in just that manner. Conflicting sensiblities are bound to occur when a company outsources editorial oversight to a group that is unenlightened about the operation of TCM itself and the subject matter the channel celebrates. *"This is so completely ridiculous. Why am I not that suprised? Hey TCM moderators, please leave this thread alone."* - molo14 Well, they have a job to do - even if it seems their zealousness has risen to the point ridiculousness. But I don't hold this thread to be outside of their purview. And I won't stop anyone from announcing their ignorance - especially the "powerful". *"Ha! better watch it Frank!"* - molo14 William Holden is a handsome devil, isn't he? While I don't like the deletion any more than you do, I do think there's a difference there. And, just to play devil's advocate, I'll point it out: what TCM shows in the air presumably would have to go through some sort of standards and practices dept. before it airs, and they probably even have to show certain movies at certain hours of the day. The forums, on the other hand, allow pretty much anyone in the world with an Internet connection to post images as they like. And maybe someone was worried that if this image was deemed OK, perhaps someone somewhere would get the idea that it was OK to post other, possibly more risqu?, photos as well. ADDIE
All of the mishegas aside, it is interesting to see what some of the posters could be like at one time. The poster for, "Footlight Parade," surprised me the first time I saw the, not covered up, version. The flappers probably appreciated the artwork of these signs, but their victorian parents were probably not so thrilled. lol addie

Much more risque ephemera, such as actual photos of naked stars, have been posted in other threads in the main two forums (which get a lot more traffic) without being deleted. HollywoodGolightly
Well, maybe I missed those. But I could swear that at some point mongo said in his thread that he had some risque photos that he wasn't going to post here because they might be a bit much. So, I don't really know if there is a consistent policy or not in regards to this kind of stuff. I think there ought to be. The question is, what happens when someone complains about stuff that most folks don't have a problem with?

But there were threads that had risque and nude photos and drawings. *So, I don't really know if there is a consistent policy or not in regards to this kind of stuff. fxreyman
Well, I think what is going on here is pretty simple. You have two ways that art is shown at TCM. One way is through film. And as we all know nudity is shown in many films on this cable channel. So is the use of foul language. And many times these films are shown later in the day. In other words usually later in the evenings. There is a reason for that. It has to do with younger people being prohibited from viewing this kind of material. And, if I were a parent, I would have no problem restricting what my child was able to watch. As for the other way art is shown, it is through this wonderful medium we call the world wide web. The problem with the web is that unless you are watching your children all the time, they might stumble upon something that you as a parent may not want them to see. And I think that is what is happening here. I don't think I would characterize it as censorship, I think what is happening is that the powers that be want this place to be as "clean" as possible for the younger ones who may frequent these pages. And let's face it, there are younger people visiting this web site everyday. In fact, one of those younger folks appeared as a guest programmer last April. I sympathize with kyle and all the rest of you who have bemoaned what has happened here, but I would not characterize what TCM has done to be censorship. They have to be careful. You think they want a multi-million dollar lawsuit coming there way because someone's child saw what their parents' thought was a pornographic image appear on these pages? I don't think the image was pornographic or in poor taste in anyway, shape or fashion. But we still live in a society where certain people get all upset over the slightest misuse (in their opinion) of this website or any other website that has such a fervent following as TCM has. I guess then the best thing to do would be NOT to complain, but to try and understand what TCM is trying to prevent here. They want us to be able to use this message board, but they don't want this message board to be disbanded just because some irate parent decided to sue the corporate parent because their child saw something that they themselves felt was not suitable for their child to see in the first place. message edited by: fxreyman

hlywdkjk
Hi 'fxreyman' - *"I don't think the image was pornographic or in poor taste in anyway, shape or fashion."* Nor do I or would any reasonable person. I didn't post screen captures from the film. The image was not photographic. (See National Geographic analogy) *"But we still live in a society where certain people get all upset over the slightest misuse (in their opinion) of this website..."* I disagree that this could be characterized by anyone as a misuse of the TCM website and Message Boards. This posting was film-centric, related to a presentation on TCM and an authentic historical artifact - as are all the postings to this thread. The deletion was not taken out of fear of litigation. *"I think what is happening is that the powers that be want this place to be as "clean" as possible for the younger ones who may frequent these pages."* "The powers that be" are _not_ who you might think they are. Nor should "thirteen-year olds" be the prevailing sensibility for the TCM Forums and I don't believe TCM subscribes to that view either. *"And let's face it, there are younger people visiting this web site everyday. In fact, one of those younger folks appeared as a guest programmer last April."* As did I. I am a valued member of the extended TCM family. I don't believe Juan or his parents would be offended. I can easily write them and ask. Any thirteen-year old who goes to an art museum would see comparable images. (Isn't there a nude in the images of artwork shown in the PG-13 *Ferris Bueller...* which is being shown in December?) *"I guess then the best thing to do would be NOT to complain, but to try and understand what TCM is trying to prevent here."* I don't think TCM _knows_ what is going on here. Yet I am not bothered about it enough to throw a "stay-at-home" mom under the bus. I am less concerned with what TCM wants to prevent here and more interested with what TCM wants to encourage here. TCM wants a to provide a place for lively, intelligent (or not) "discussion" of films and film history. Some of us are invested in trying to make that happen while others are only doing a job. If editting of posts impede TCM's purpose, then those actions aren't encouraging such activity and are detrimental to the long-term health of these Forums.
