Separated migrant children are headed toward shelters that have a history of abuse and neglect

Taxpayers have paid more than $1.5 billion to private companies operating shelters accused of serious lapses in care, including neglect and abuse.

"....In Texas, where the resettlement agency awarded the majority of the grants, state inspectors have cited homes with more than 400 deficiencies, about one-third of them serious.

Allegations included staff members’ failure to seek medical attention for children. One had a burn, another a broken wrist, a third a sexually transmitted disease. In another shelter, staff gave a child medicine to which she was allergic, despite a warning on her medical bracelet. Inspectors also cited homes for “inappropriate contact” between children and staff, including a case in which a staff member gave children a pornographic magazine...

One way these shelters continue to receive government funding has been to voluntarily close any subsidiaries or strategically rebrand themselves following any allegations tied to the mistreatment of children in their care. ........

Trump's order could mean families will be together in detention purgatory indefinitely. But where will they stay?

At the current rate, family detention centers could be full after only eight days.
......

The executive order calls on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to file a request with a federal court in California to modify a 1997 court settlement which sets standards for the government’s detention of migrant children, so that migrant families could be detained together through their criminal proceedings for illegal entry charges and for any other immigration proceedings.

Previously, as a result of that settlement, known as the Flores decision, children could not be detained with their families for more than 20 days. The Trump administration may now try to defy that time limit and hold the families until the parents can have their cases adjudicated, since they will continue to be prosecuted for crossing the border illegally.......

This is why illegal immigrant shouldn't be held at all;  instead send them right back across the border they came from.    No catch and release,  no cases adjudicated,  but just real-time deportation.

Only grant adjudication to those that seek asylum legally.

The ones fleeing MS-13 or corrupt leaders like Duque have a right to stay imo. The ones just seeking work end up being exploited and destroying opportunities for American workers.

Trump Orders End To Family Separations At US-Mexico Border

After global outrage over U.S. President Donald Trump's policy to separate asylum-seeking families at the Mexican border, he signs to end the practice.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday to end the separation of undocumented migrant parents and children seeking to enter the United States at the Mexico border.

The Trump administration had separated 2,000 families in the past six weeks at the U.S.-Mexico border, holding children as young as four years old in cages within cold warehouses in border states. The warehouses have become known as #Trumpcamps and have been likened to the U.S. Japanese internment camps during WWII.

Social media outlets lit up this week with domestic and international backlash protesting Trump's family separation policy. A June 18 Quinnipiac poll found that U.S. residents opposed the policy 66-27.

I agree with that as long as those fleeing arrive at the border and ask for asylum (instead of just coming into the country illegally and after getting caught then ask for asylum).

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents are systematically violating U.S. and international law by blocking immigrants at international ports of entry on the southern border from entering the country so they can claim asylum. Immigration civil rights advocates have been documenting this illegal behavior since late 2016, from Texas to California...........

The blocking works this way: In the precise middle of the international bridges, CBP agents stand, sentry-like, near the imaginary line dividing the two countries — a line often marked with a ceremonial metal plaque. The agents peer at everyone crossing, looking for people they think might be candidates for asylum. If the people say anything suggesting they might be requesting asylum — if they’re not Mexicans, and especially if they’re from Central America — the agents block their way and say to come back another time. ......

By blocking asylum-seekers from crossing legally, CBP is pressuring them to cross illegally. Garcia believes that this new practice gives the government an excuse to split up even more families. ...

Paul Cockshott article on how immigration tends to reduce wages and increase unemployment. Worth a read.

https://paulcockshott.wordpress.com/2016/06/27/brexit-imigration-and-exploitation/

A key debate during the referendum campaign was on whether immigration exercised a downward pressure on wages or not. This was prominently argued over during the TV debates and if the Ashcroft polls are to be believed, the second most important reason given by Leave voters for their choice of vote was hat leaving “offered the best chance for the UK to regain control over immigration and its own borders.”

Among both Labour and Tory supporters who voted Leave, the most important consideration was : “the principle that decisions about the UK should be taken in the UK”.

Since the Leave result on Friday morning social media has been full of Remain voters complaining about the ignorance and xenophobia of working class voters in the North who gave border controls as a motive for voting against the EU. But were the fears expressed about the effects of immigration from within the EU just ignorant prejudice, or did they reflect something real?

The Remain campaign, during the TV debates, emphasised the contribution that immigrant workers made to the economy and particularly to the NHS, pointing out that they were hard workers who paid taxes and contributed to the national exchequer. But that was to spectacularly miss the point. You do not reduce people’s worries by saying the EU immigrants work hard. Hard workers who will accept low wages, are likely to seem more of a threat than people who take it easy.

Does competition with immigrant labour tend to reduce real wages?

Here is a scatter plot showing the relationship between immigration and exploitation in the UK since 1970.

10 states to sue over child separations and Trump executive order

"What they’re doing right now is unconstitutional," Washington Solicitor General Noah Purcell said.

......... The lawsuit will challenge the constitutionality of separating children from their parents "as a matter of course" when they are caught crossing into the United States illegally, alleging a violation of due process, Ferguson's office said. .........

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has also announced a separate multiagency lawsuit over the separations. Among the claims, it will allege that holding children apart from their families is a violation of their constitutional rights, and that even detaining children with their families runs afoul of the Flores settlement, which says children cannot be detained with their families for more than 20 days.

Also Thursday, the Department of Justice asked a federal judge to let the government detain migrant families for periods beyond the 20-day limit of the Flores settlement...

Border Patrol agents shut down I-95 southbound in Maine.

“If you want to continue down the road, then yes ma’am. We need to know what citizen — what country you’re a citizen of,” an agent said.

This is insane.

The Art of No Deal: Why Trump doesn't want an immigration bill

Analysis: President Donald Trump loves the politics of the immigration debate — which is why he doesn't really want to solve it.
....... "Trump knows hard-line immigration reform remains at or near the top of every issue poll of Republican voters," former Republican Rep. David Jolly of Florida said. "What he lacks in understanding of actual immigration policy, he makes up for with a keen understanding of the dark border security themes that pervade the GOP. He knows anger motivates more than contentment. It's clear he has a deliberate strategy to carry this issue unresolved into November." ....

But the bill he had just said he would not sign into law already included all of those items — just about everything he's said he wants in immigration legislation.

Confronted with the fact that the bill was tailored to his demands, Trump backed down from his position. Then he traveled to Capitol Hill this week to urge GOP lawmakers to pass it. And then, when it was on life-support Friday, he pulled the plug by publicly saying members of his party were "wasting their time" by even considering it...

"Time for this Congress to put this misguided Amnesty effort in the shredder."

That's the reaction Trump wants from base Republican voters as the midterms approach. And it's why he appears to determined to both keep the immigration issue alive and refuse to cut a good-faith bargain.

MSNBC Cuts Off Trump Immigration Event To Fact Check His Lies

......Let’s look at the real numbers. There were a total of 415,191 apprehensions fiscal year 2017. They were 8,531 criminal aliens arrested. Of those three — three, were convicted of homicide or man more than 4,000 were convicted for illegal entry or reentry. Mostly, that’s a misdemeanor. And to be completely clear, the CBP defines criminal aliens as aliens who have been convicted of one or more crimes, whether in the U.S. Or abroad prior to interdiction by the U.S. Border patrol and does not include convictions for conduct that is not deemed criminal by the United States.

There is more........

Fact checks should be standard procedure for every Trump event

MSNBC got it right. If Donald Trump is going to use the presidency to lie to the American people, the press must correct those lies and not allow him to spread unchallenged disinformation....

The Feds should set up a bond program for the migrants waiting for their hearing.

Allow private citizens to pay the bond (say 5K).  The migrant family is released to this private citizen and they move in with them.     If the adult migrants don't show up for their hearing the bond if forfeited.

This allows those those that wish for these migrants to have a hearing to step up to the plate and show the compassion they claim,  folks like me don't have.    Hey,  they will get the bond money back, right,  since an illegal immigrant isn't going to take advance of the system and NOT show up for the hearing!

Behind the Criminal Immigration Law: Eugenics and White Supremacy

The history of the statute that can make it a felony to illegally enter the country involves some dark corners of U.S. history.

.....“The Democrats have to change their law — that’s their law,” Trump told reporters on Friday.

The president didn’t specify which law he was talking about. But the statute at the center of his administration’s policy is the work of Republicans — with origins dating back all the way to World War I — albeit with substantial Democratic support along the way.

Known originally as the “Undesirable Aliens Act,” the statute would not exist without support from, respectively, a eugenicist and a white supremacist..

Trump Aims to Dismantle Protections for Immigrant Kids and Radically Expand the Family Detention System

........DHS sec. Nielsen’s message, obtained by The Intercept, described the border as being in a state of “crisis,” and said the recent executive order on border enforcement from Trump could only go so far in addressing the issue. The secretary pointed to three legislative priorities the administration is seizing on in response, including undoing a law designed to protect child victims of human trafficking, reforming the asylum system to prevent its “abuse,” and overturning a settlement that prohibits the prolonged detention of immigrant kids.

Nielsen skirted the question on the minds of millions of Americans: How does the government plan to reunite the thousands of children, including toddlers and babies, forcibly separated from their parents by DHS?

Instead, she focused on changing laws that prevent the government from locking children up indefinitely and systems designed to respect the rights of people fleeing violence and persecution.....

US border agents halt migrant family prosecutions

A US border security chief says he has temporarily stopped launching criminal prosecutions of migrants who illegally enter the country with children.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Kevin McAleenan told reporters in Texas the prosecution referrals were suspended last week.

He said it followed an order last week by President Donald Trump calling for an end to migrant family separations.

But Mr Trump had suggested the families would instead be detained together.

The Republican president bowed to public pressure last Wednesday, signing his executive order to "keep families together" in migrant detentions.

Whistleblower Leaks Video From Detention Facility Where Children Were Threatened Against Speaking to Press

"I feel that it's time for everybody to stand up and stop being afraid and actually help these children being separated from their parents."

Footage, audio, and photos from inside a children's detention center in New York show a child crying and asking to speak with her mother and an employee ominously warning children that speaking to the press could endanger their immigration case.

A former employee of a facility in New York shared the material with "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC a week after quitting her job in protest of the Trump administration's forcible separation of families.

In one clip, the employee speaks to a young girl named Jessica about her mother, who she says has been sent to Virginia and who she hasn't spoken with in at least a week, and says she will try to connect the two.

With “Muslim Ban” Ruling, Trump’s White Supremacy Has Moved From the Campaign Trail to the Supreme Court

.....“SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS TRUMP TRAVEL BAN,” tweeted the president on Tuesday morning. “Wow.”

Wow, indeed.

Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts said that Trump’s executive order had “a legitimate grounding in national security concerns,” rather than religious discrimination.

Yet in December 2015, at a rally in South Carolina, Trump called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on.”.......

What makes Tuesday’s decision so bizarre and disingenuous is that Roberts noted and quoted each and every one of them in his 39-page opinion. Yet the chief justice and the rest of his reactionary crew were still able to conclude that the president’s executive order was “expressly premised on legitimate purposes” and said “nothing about religion.”

This is white supremacy in action........
