Robert Ryan ate the cactus to get water. He waited for a rain storm to get water. An old prospector saved him. He broke his leg. The false trail was planted by his enemy. His attempted killer was drunk and impatient. His wife was unfaithful. There was a Dude Ranch nearby.

Just saw it this morning. What a dreadful movie (I wouldn't have liked it even if I cared for Robert Young as an actor, but he's always struck me as kind of phony in a middle-aged-adolescent sort of way). I have always really liked Jane Greer, though.

And that business at the end, with Young's character shot trying to escape from court just before the verdict is read. What kind of audience is so stupid as not to figure out that the jury's just voted to acquit, since there wouldn't be any "twist" if now-dead Young had been found guilty, making his escape more-or-less justified?
