slappy3500
What the heck was that introducing "The Women" last nite? It looked like a gay version of Cosmo Kramer! Style? Well it IS October, I guess he was wearing his Halloween costume. He raved on and on and ON about the fashions in the movie...yeah they were really great-especially the one Roz Russle wore: 3 (?) eyeballs on her blouse and what looked like a flower pot on her head! He mentioned the color segment "the fashion show was like a dream sequence " and the fact that it was an all-female cast....thanks for the insights MR Obvious! What's next? Dennis Rodman introducing "In the Heat of the Night???
classicsfan1119
Dennis Rodman? Oh heck, why not? He couldn't be any worse than those we've seen so far (LOL). About the guy last night, I was so fixated on, and laughing about, his hairdo that I missed anything he said anyway. And, as always, he wasn't talking to me by looking into a camera that would allow him to talk to me, so why listen to him?
sandykaypax
That was fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi. Incidentally, he designed the costumes for the stage revival of The Women last year (or maybe it was 2 years ago). He also has a tv show on cable's Oxygen network. Actually, I thought that his comments about Julie Christie in DARLING (which was on after The Women) were quite interesting. He talked about the difference between style (which is individual) and fashion (which society agrees upon). I agree that his hair is goofy, but I've seen him in interviews before and he loves classic film. So, I think that he was an appropriate choice to host last night's salute to fashion in film. littletramplover
Isaac Mizrahi and Cosmo Kramer. . . that's perhaps one of the very BEST analogies I've ever come across! BUT, in Mizrahi's defense, I DO happen to like his work as a designer and, like sandypax, have love the fact that he's such a fan of classic film. Yeah, Rosalind Russel's dress with the eyeballs always freaked me out, and that dress in the fashion show with the HAND attatched to it?!? BUT this film is one of my absolute, and I mean ABSOLUTE favorite films ever. Besides, Norma Shearer's outfits in that film are postively wonderful. And Paulette Goddard's dress on the train to Reno is fabulous, so I really can't complain. And classicsfan, you said : And, as always, he wasn't talking to me by looking into a camera that would allow him to talk to me, so why listen to him? That is a HUGE pet peeve of mine as well!!! Grrrrrr. Oh why oh why can't WE be the Movie Hosts?!?
longlonesomeroad
I agree with sandykaypax that Isaac Mizrahi was a suitable pick for last night's style commentator. So what that he isn't cover model material...lovers of classic film come in all shapes and sizes. Mr. Mizrahi IS a classic film lover (obvious to me after seeing the 1995 documentary "Unzipped", of which he is the subject) AND a fashion designer...are those not the appropriate credentials for hosting a segment on fasion in classic movies? I enjoy participating on this message board and honestly respect its members, but I'm growing very weary of the constant complaints and criticism about every little change or experimentation that occurs on TCM. I sometimes wonder why some of this board's members don't save themselves the worry and stick to watching dvds and tapes.
slappy3500
Lighten UP long. This guy practically SCREAMS to be masde fun of. I'll bet he wore a "kick me" sign in High School. No matter WHAT his qualifications, IMO he is not suitable to be a host on TCM. I found his comments on "The Women" to be uninspired and his appearance and manner detract from any cogent points he might make. Just because someone has impecable credentials it does not automatically translate into succestful movie host. Just like I don't want to hear some overly pedantic gasbag who's an expert on education introduce "Goodbye Mr Chips." Besides what are these forums FOR if not to air our views. It's FUN! classicsfan1119
I think that you're missing the whole point, Longlonesomeroad. It's not the films we're talking about here (which you say we can buy or tape), it's the people who have been Hosting some of TCM's spots recently. I admit that last night's Designer made some interesting, and even intelligent remarks here and there. My real complaint is that these spots are being filmed in such a way as to exclude me (in the audience) as being a participant in them. Why are they not making eye contact with me? Are they not attempting to talk to and "inform" me? Robert Osborn has always been and will always remain my favorite Host because he does speak directly to me. He doesn't rely on looking or acting like a freak to draw attention...he just does his job excellently, and politely at that! If TCM will just correct this serious interactional flaw that they have recently created, I'll shut up.
