Black American Movies

Recommended Posts

Anyone else enjoy the old movies with an all Black cast? Movies that starred Mantan Moreland like "Spirit Of Youth" (also starring Joe Louis), and "Lucky Ghost". The movies of Spencer Williams like "The Blood Of Jesus". "Boarding House Blues" starring Moms Mabley. Real gems. I enjoy any movie with Mantan Moreland which includes the Charlie Chan movies. Have any of these Black American movies played on TCM?

On Friday (12/14) "Moon Over Harlem" will be on TCM at 4:00pm. That has an all-Black cast and is directed by "Detour" director Edgar G. Ulmer. Try that one on for size.

TCM certainly shows a fair number of older black films, especially for "Black History Month".

This coming January TCM is presenting a selection of films from contemporary filmmaker Charles Burnett. From the TCM Press Release -

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY MARATHON + CHARLES BURNETT MARATHON – Monday, Jan. 21

TCM commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a daytime marathon of films that look at the issue of race relations, including The Jackie Robinson Story (1950), Intruder in the Dust (1949), A Patch of Blue (1957) and A Raisin in the Sun (1961). Then during prime time, TCM pays tribute to African-American independent filmmaker Charles Burnett with TCM premieres of five of his incisive films, including Killer of Sheep (1977), The Horse (1973), My Brother’s Wedding (1983), When It Rains (1995) and Several Friends (1969).

I am not remotely familiar with the work of Charles Burnett but I have come across articles mentioning this filmmaker recently. A Google Search may be enlightening.

As to older All-Black cast films, TCM has presented many films from Oscar Micheaux in the past. See here -

And here is a list of films aired during a Black History Month in the recent past (not too recent as it has been three years since the Oscars moved to February eliminating "regular" programming in February.)

KILLER OF SHEEP (1977) has finally been released to DVD along with five more Charles Burnet films:

TCM will be showing these in January (as Kyle mentioned) so set your recorders. This is a chance to see one of the greatest American filmakers you've probably never heard of.

Do not miss the Charles Burnett tribute. *Killer of Sheep* is one of the most moving films I have ever seen. The boxset was listed first on my Christmas Wish List. If you are a blues fan and are not familiar with Burnett's name, you may have seen his film, Warming by the Devil's Fire, which was part of the Martin Scorsese Presents...The Blues.
