U.S. pulls out of a global pact on the treatment of migrants.

"The U.S. is stepping away from a U.N. agreement aimed at addressing the needs of migrants, saying it could “undermine the sovereign right of the United States to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders,” according to the State Department.

The U.S. joined the global compact on migration in September 2016 under then-President Barack Obama. Under that declaration, countries aim to “protect the human rights of all refugees and migrants, regardless of status.”...

First tax havens blacklist published by EU

"...EU tax commissioner Pierre Moscovici said the blacklist represented "substantial progress", adding: "Its very existence is an important step forward. But because it is the first EU list, it remains an insufficient response to the scale of tax evasion worldwide."

To determine whether a country is a "non-cooperative jurisdiction" the EU index measures the transparency of its tax regime, tax rates and whether the tax system encourages multinationals to unfairly shift profits to low tax regimes to avoid higher duties in other states. In particular these include tax systems that offer incentives such as 0% corporate tax to foreign companies............

Here's something that a doctor brought to my attention. In Canada or in the UK if I went to my doctor for say, lower back pain they might prescribe physiotherapy which would be covered by the government.  In the U.S., Insurance companies might be unlikely to cover such treatment so the doctors prescribe Opiods for pain relief.  So not only are Americans not always getting the appropriate treatment the fact that Insurance companies run the system is encouraging the opiod crisis.

First France, Now Brazil Unveils Plan to Empower the Government to Censor the Internet in the Name of Stopping “Fake News”

".... Which is the more serious threat: the ability of people to publish false claims (which have existed since humans developed the capacity to speak or write, and are subject to correction), or vesting governments around the world to censor entire websites and social media postings on the ground that they have judged them to be “false” or “fake?”  Since the advent of the internet, the one danger regarded as most menacing was having states and corporations assume control over the political content that one can express. ....

How Myanmar forces burned, looted and killed in a remote village

Then, on Jan. 10, the military issued a statement that confirmed portions of what Wa Lone, Kyaw Soe Oo and their colleagues were preparing to report, acknowledging that 10 Rohingya men were massacred in the village. It confirmed that Buddhist villagers attacked some of the men with swords and soldiers shot the others dead....

Is water a commodity or a human right?

The commission replied saying that it "believes the privatisation of public utilities, including water supply firms, can deliver benefits to the society when carefully made.".............
