Swithin
My favorite foreign-language film of 1995 is The Horseman on the Roof (Le Hussard sur le toit), directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau and starring Olivier Martinez and Juliette Binoche. The film takes place in 1832 and focuses on an Italian patriot, (Angelo, played by Martinez), who is pursued by evil Austrians, who is hiding out in France, during a cholera epidemic. He enters the home of the Countess de Theus (played by Binoche), and the two of them flee cholera and Angelo's enemies. A beautiful film -- love, politics, aristocracy, amid the horror of cholera-riddled bodies strewn about picturesque French villages. Beautifully shot in France, partly around Aix. (Btw, there is an incredible performance by a cat in this film.)

Bogie56
Famed theatre director Robert LePage's Le Confessional (1995) is a mystery that takes place in Quebec City of 1952 while Alfred Hithcock is there shooting I Confess (1953). Need I say that this is a natural double bill. Lothaire Bluteau and Kirsten Scott Thomas star.
Bogie56
The Deathmaker (1995) Romuald Karmakar, Germany. This is based on the police transcripts of the interrogation of serial killer Fritz Haaman who killed 27 boys. Over the course of the film Haaman who is no doubt a bit simple is drawn out to talk about his motives and methods of which he is quite proud. This may not appeal to everyone but there is no denying that Gotz George's performance as Haaman is outstanding.
