LawrenceA Posted May 12 Godzilla 2000 was made in response to the much-derided 1998 American Godzilla film. The previous Japanese Godzilla films were considered parts of two distinctive series: the "Showa" series, which began with the first 1954 film and ended with 1975's Terror of Mechagodzilla; and the "Heisei" series, which began with 1984's The Return of Godzilla (released in the US as Godzilla 1985) and ended with 1995's Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. Godzilla 2000 marked what would become known as the "Millennium" series, and would run for six films through 2004. It was also the last Japanese Godzilla film to receive any sort of wide release in the US, as Sony felt this underperformerd at the box office, and the rest of the Millennium series debuted on video here. Much like the previous Heisei films, this leans heavily on the science fiction elements, with high-tech weapons and UFOs. It's often silly and juvenile in that Godzilla way, but those involved play it straight, and it's certainly better than the 1998 American film. Gorgeous was an early example of mega-star Jackie Chan attempting to break from his usual martial arts action and comedy roles. He knew that he wasn't getting any younger, and wanted to branch out into the sort of things that would be easier to manage in his later years. He worked heavily behind the scenes on this romantic comedy, assembling an impressive cast that included Shu Qi (once labeled "the most beautiful woman in Asia") as his love interest, Tony Leung Chiu Wai as the "gay friend", and even action-comedy superstar Stephen Chow as a policeman. Performers such as Richie Jen, Stephen Fung, Daniel Wu, and Sam Lee would all go on to subsequent stardom, and there are several cameos from other notable Hong Kong film stars. The film was a big financial success in the Asian markets, but ironically enough, the only critical recognition Chan received was for action choreography. As a romantic comedy, it will seem positively chaste to western viewers, as overt displays of affection were frowned upon in some Asian markets, and thus those kinds of scenes were left out. Still, for fans of Hong Kong cinema, particularly those with a knowledge of that industry in the 1980's and 90's, this is worth seeing for the cast.

Bogie56 Posted May 12 I saw Venus Beauty Institute by Tonia Marshall a few years ago at the Cinema Lumiere in Kensington, London which is a very good cinematheque for French language films. It centres on the love lives of three beauty parlour employees played by Nathalie Baye, Audrey Tautou and Mathilde Seigner. Bulle Ogier plays the owner of the salon. It is nothing earth-shattering but made very enjoyable by good performances especially by Baye and Seigner.
