CoraSmith Posted May 19 Little Otik (Otesánek) is a Czech film by Jan Svankmajer in which live action and animation are combined. A married couple can't get children, so the husband carves a puppet out of wood to raise it as a baby. It comes from a fairy tale in which the little puppet comes to life, not unlike Pinocchio. Flickering Lights (Blinkende Lygter) is a Danish crime comedy by Anders Thomas Jensen. Four small time crooks steal money from the real gangsters for whom they were doing a job. They flee to the country to start a restaurant. Some of the greatest Danish actors are involved. Left to right: Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Mads Mikkelsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Søren Pilmark. The Day I Became a Woman (Roozi Khe Zan Shodam) is an Iranian drama by Marzieh Makhmalbaf. It follows three different women of three different ages. It's a protest against the lack of freedom for these women, but approached with a sense of humor. It involves the shadows of a stick, a bicycle race and furniture on the beach.

Bogie56 Posted May 19 Dora-Heita (2000) Kon Ichikawa, Japan. My number two choice of 2000. An entertaining look at a samurai who is charged with becoming a magistrate of a very corrupt town. This film was a long time in the making and boasts a screenplay by Akira Kurosawa, Kon Ichikawa, Keisuke Kinoshita and Masaki Kobayashi. Recommended.
