Bogie56
Robert LePage's The Far Side of the Moon was my favourite among the foreign films that I have seen from 2003. LePage also stars, playing two very different brothers who are both trying to cope with the recent death of their mother. The U.S./Soviet space race provides a back drop to the film. This is an adaptation of LePage's stage play which I have to say I enjoyed much more than the film. To see LePage "space walk" with no wires is more of treat to see on stage than on film where anything is possible. His optical illusions are very innovative and fun.
LawrenceA
I have some among my top choices from the four corners of the globe that I don't recall seeing anyone else mention: Save the Green Planet! is a very unusual South Korean film about a man who believes that aliens are invading the planet. To somehow prevent this, he kidnaps a drug company president. The movie starts out like a farcical comedy before taking detours into heavy drama and suspense. You're never quite sure where this one is going, and I really appreciated that unpredictability. High Tension, also known by the original French title Haute Tension, is a grisly horror film that sees two young women (Cecile de France and Maiwenn) being stalked by a brutish serial killer (Philippe Nahon). There's a lot of grungy style and cinematic verve on display by director Alexandre Aja, and the film isn't for the faint of heart. However, there's a twist late in the film that tends to alienate a large part of the audience, so be forewarned about it. There was a boom of excellent horror and suspense films coming out of Europe in the 00's, many of which were of much higher quality than what was getting made in the US. High Tension is often listed among these "New Wave of European Horror" films. PTU, which stands for Police Tactical Unit, is a crime drama/action film from director Johnnie To, who established himself as the most reliable maker of quality crime pictures out of Hong Kong in the 2000's. In PTU, the story follows one unit over the course of a single night as they encounter various crimes, from the minor to the deadly. The cast inlcudes Simon Yam, Maggie Shiu, Lam Suet, and Ruby Wong. To's films often focus heavily on the Triad criminal underworld, and here it's shown that their connection with the police force is more complicated than just black-and-white, law-and-order absolutism. Carandiru is a Brazilian prison drama from director Hector Babenco (Kiss of the Spider Woman, Ironweed). Carandiru is the name of a prison in Sao Paolo, and it's the largest penal facility in Latin America. The film is a mosaic of stories of various prisoners, leading up to the infamous prison massacre of 1992 that left over a hundred inmates dead. The large cast is very good, but the standout is Rodrigo Santoro as "Lady Di", a flamboyant gay inmate who may have contracted HIV, which is rampant in the prison.
