the-graceful-brute-cast-photo.jpg

I saw Yuzo Kawashima's The Elegant Beast, or The Graceful Brute just a few weeks ago at Toronto's TIFF Cinematheque.  It's a comedy that bitingly pokes fun at the materialism in modern Japan society.  A family that live in a tenement are nothing but grifters.  The son has embezzled a large amount of money from the company he works for.  He hopes to escape prosecution as it will only uncover his superior's criminality.  But what none of them have counted on is the wiles of the accountant played by the beautiful Ayako Wakao.  She is the Omarosa of her day.

Chushingura is yet another adaptation of the 47 Ronin, a Japanese folk-tale based in fact about 47 samurai who avenged their deceased and disgraced master in a plot that took years to come to fruition. The first film version was all the way back in 1907 (!!!). There were several more versions including a mammoth 220-minute version from Kenji Mizoguchi in 1941. This version from 1962 was directed by Hiroshi Inagaki of the Samurai Trilogy fame. It also runs over three hours, but I never checked the clock once. It takes a while to get a hang of all of the characters, but things come together very well by the end, and I was very moved the first time I watched it. A true epic of Japanese cinema.

220px-Shinobi_no_Mono_7_poster.jpg

Shinobi no Mono (aka Ninja, a Band of Assassins) is basically a genre action film, but a well-made and entertaining one. Raizo Ichikawa stars as Goemon Ishikawa, legendary ninja and thorn in the side of the ruling samurai clans. In this first film, Goemon is tasked with assassinating ruthless warlord Oda Nobunaga (Tomisaburo Wakayama of Lone Wolf and Cub fame). Director Satsuo Yamamoto instills a lot of style and quick pacing, and the script holds a few surprises. Raizo Ishikawa was a major star in Japan in the 1950's and 60's. He died of cancer at the age of 37 in 1969. He's not as well known in the west as Toshiro Mifune or Tatsuya Nakadai, but he was arguably a bigger star in his homeland than either of them. There were several more Shinobi films, as well as a TV series and film remakes. Raizo also starred in the Sleepy Eyes of Death series, but I haven't seen any of those.

Baron Prasil - Czech movie about the life of Baron Munchausen. . The film starts with a cosmonaut landing on the moon only to discover the Baron is already there. The Baron talks to him for a bit and takes him to Earth for his adventures. I thought the animation style in this was very nice, especially the way it blended animation with real people. The jazz type soundtrack was also very nice and fit what was going on screen very well.

1960steamroller02.jpg

The Steamroller and the Violin - early Tarkovsky film with a young violin player and a steamroller operator making friends. The man teaches the kid how to fight his bullies and to stand up for himself. The steamroller operator invites him to see a movie but the kid is locked away by his mother because she said he had to stay in that night. This movie was kind of touching and sad and I liked the cinematography.

I've seen Arturo's Island but based on my diary entry was not wowed by it.  I'm not offering any description of the film as I would only be cribbing from wikipedia.  My memory of it is quite hazy!
