LawrenceA
Top Ten Favorites of the 1970's - If you don't feel that my top choice is foreign language enough (as it's usually shown in English), then disregard it and count #2 as #1. If my #2 is objectionable for being a series rather than a single film, then disregard that one as well, and count #3 as my #1 pick. 1) Suspiria (1977), Dario Argento, Italy 2) Lone Wolf and Cub (1972-1974), Kenji Misumi & Buichi Saito & Yoshiyuki Kuroda, Japan 3) The Conformist (1970), Bernardo Bertolucci, Italy 4) The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972), Luis Bunuel, France/Italy/Spain 5) Solaris (1972), Andrei Tarkovsky, USSR 6) The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978), Chia-Liang Liu, Hong Kong 7) Dersu Uzala (1975), Akira Kurosawa, USSR 8 - Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), Werner Herzog, West Germany 9) The Way of the Dragon (1972), Bruce Lee, Hong Kong 10) El Topo (1970), Alejandro Jodorowsky, Mexico

CoraSmith
A few words about my top choice The Marriage of Maria Braun (Die Ehe der Maria Braun). It's the first of three films in which Fassbinder criticized the "Wirtschaftswunder", the rebuilding of West Germany in the fifties. Hanna Schygulla plays a seductress. The men in her life symbolize the different German ideologies: her husband is a Nazi in prison; her new lover is a businessman who represents the new capitalism. Colours are carefully chosen: a lot of brown, and red as a symbol for seduction. A lot of shots are through a grate or window. History is present on the radio in the background. The structure is symmetrical, with an explosion in the beginning and at the end. Supporting actors like the long Gottfried John and the accountant Hark Bohm, who appear in other Fassbinder films as well, have great faces for character roles. Fassbinder gave himself a small role as a black marketeer.
