plouffe-13.jpg~original

Les Plouffe (1981) by Gilles Carle is one of my favourite Quebecois films.  I saw an English subtitled film print.  Apparently the French language version runs much longer.  It is based on a 1950's television show about the fictitious Plouffe family during WWII.  Its appeal was the wonderfully drawn characters.

Of note was Emile Genest as the patriarch.  Some may remember Genest as the French Canadian who appeared in two Disney films that were shot on location in Quebec: The Incredible Journey (1963) and Big Red (1962).

Monique Spaziani stars as a young woman returning to the family she fled years before in Francis Mankiewicz Les Beaux Souvenirs (1981).  It wasn't quite as good as Mankiewicz's film from the previous year, Les Bon Debbaras but still worth a look.  Unfortunately the NFB dvd does not come with subtitles.

To the Stars By Hard Ways - A team of scientists find a clone in a deserted space station in this Soviet sci fi film. She is brought back to live with a family and learns she has odd powers. Gradually she comes to learn some unnerving things about her past. Yelena Metyolkina is very good as the robot in this though she did not go on to star in very many films. This film is worth a look.

Philippe Noiret and Isabelle Huppert star in Bertrand Tavernier's Coup de Torchon (1981).  It is based on the Jim Thompson novel Pop. 1280 and the setting has been transplanted from Texas to French West Africa.  Noiret plays an ineffectual and put upon police chief who reaches the breaking point.  I've seen this a couple of times and recommend it.

I've put Krzstof Kieslowski's Blind Chance as a 1981 film.  It was completed that year but banned by the communist Polish government and did not get a release until 1987.  A man dashes to make a train.  We see three different scenarios based on whether he makes the train or not and how it effects the rest of his life.

the-marquis-of-grillo.jpg

Alberto Sordi is in top form in Mario Monicelli's The Marquise of Grillo (1981).  The Marquise loves practical jokes and when he happens upon his doppelgänger, a henpecked drunk he kidnaps him, places him in his palace bed and disappears.  When the unsuspecting drunk wakes up he is treated like royalty by everyone in the household.

die-faelschung-1981-12.jpg

One might have thought the german film Circle of Deceit (1981) had been shot by Werner Herzog given that it takes place in war-torn Beirut and was shot in war-torn Beirut.  But Volker Schlondorff directed this film about a journalist (Bruno Ganz) covering the Lebanese war.  There are some astounding shots in the film and I gather Schlondorff took the liberty of blowing some things up for the camera.  It's not like you would notice the difference.  Hanna Schygulla co-stars.  Recommended.
