Bogie56
I was quite impressed by the french thriller Diva (1981) by Jean-Jacques Beinex the first time that I saw it. Not so much the second time. It's style wowed the critics in North America when it was released. It has a pretty good chase in the Paris Metro. The hero is in possession of two recordings that various parties will stop at nothing to get. One is a tape that implicates a gangster and the other is a long sought recording of an Opera star. 3

Swithin
La Nuit de Varennes (1982), directed by Etore Scola, is one of my favorite foreign language films. Set in France during the French Revolution, the fictional story involves a coach carrying Casanova, Thomas Paine, Resif de la Bretonne, and other luminaries of the period. The coach happens to be traveling a few hours behind another coach, which carries King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, who are fleeing Paris. This is a marvelous, moving, intelligent movie, featuring great performances by Jean-Louis Barrault, John-Claude Brialy, Andrea Ferreol, Hanna Schygulla, Laura Betti, Harvey Keitel, and above all, Marcello Mastroianni, whose touching performance as the aging Casanova is one of the cinema’s most moving portrayals. La Nuit de Varennes features intelligent conversations about art, politics, and romance; great production values; a beautiful score, rooted in the Baroque music of its day; and glorious performances. A masterpiece of foreign language film.

LawrenceA
The Impossible Kid is a James Bond spoof, and the sequel to 1981's For Your Height Only (I haven't seen that one...yet). It stars 2 feet, 9 inch tall Filipino actor Weng Weng as Agent 00, the best operative in the Manila office of Interpol. It's a jaw-dropping exploitation movie that often uses cheap short jokes for bad humor, but Weng Weng plays it straight (he's not the world's most accomplished actor), and the action is hilariously over-the-top. It's schlock theater like no other, and one of the best "bad" movies of the decade.
