Bogie56 Posted February 11 Kon Ichikawa's Princess From the Moon (1987) is a charming Japanese fairy tale. Ayako Wakao (left) and Toshiro Mifune (right) play poor parents who have lost their child. Soon after they come across an abandoned baby in the forest which they adopt and bring up as their own. The baby has also come with gold coins which is handy and the diaper years are incredibly short as the child grows up into adulthood almost overnight. The beautiful Yasuko Sawagushi (below) plays the Princess who has many suitors.

LawrenceA Posted February 11 I have a trio of Italian horrors among my top choices, and one noteworthy one in my "also seens". Opera aka Terror at the Opera was Dario Argento's return to the giallo genre. It involves a mysterious killer preying on people preparing a production of Verdi's Macbeth. I'm sure there are nuances of the opera medium that are lost on me, but I enjoy the film regardless. It features a very shocking stabbing, and the memorable image of people having needles taped under their eyes to stop them from closing their eyelids. Like most of Argento's films, its plotline is bizarre, and the music is memorable, featuring tracks from Brian Eno, the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman, and Claudio Simonetti of frequent Argento scorer Goblin. The international cast includes Ian Charleson and William McNamara. Speaking of actors in Opera, one such was Argento protege Michele Soavi, who in 1987 made his feature directorial debut with StageFright. It's a taut thriller in the giallo genre with actors in a large theater rehearsing an imminent stage production while unknowingly being stalked by an escaped homicidal mental patient. Soavi demonstrated that he learned a lot from his mentor with excellent staging and use of music and lighting. Frequent Italian genre film heavy George Eastman co-wrote the script. Aenigma was from Italian horror icon Lucio Fulci. It concerns students at an exclusive all-girls school being menaced by a supernatural force. It plays like a cross between previous psychic genre films Patrick (1978) and Carrie (1976). American actor Jared Martin appears as a doctor. This isn't a very good movie (I barely gave it a 6/10) but it made it onto my list for a handful of memorable sequences, such as a girl being "attacked" by snails. Yes, snails! Speaking of barely making the grade, Delirium aka Photos of Gioia appears at the top of my "also seen" list, but while I rated it a 5/10, on a different day I may rank it higher and it would have made my top list. It's another giallo, this time from Lamberto Bava, and it concerns killings connected to a glamorous model played by the cartoonishly voluptuous Serena Grandi. The movie features glossy cinematography and evocative lighting, but the most memorable aspect (outside of the copious nudity) is a series of hallucinations shown from the point of view of the killer, in which the victims appear to have a giant eyeball for a face, or the head of a bee, or other such bizarre sights. Co-starring George Eastman, the aforementioned screenwriter of StageFright.
Gershwin fan Posted February 11 Akseleratka - This is the Russian version of the Martial Arts movies. Irina Shmeleva plays Anuta, a young girl who wishes to become a police detective. The police tell Anuta she is much too young and inexperienced to join the force so she sets out to prove them wrong. With her boyfriend Kuzey, they try to infiltrate a carjacking ring. In dubiously choreographed scenes she fights the carjackers with karate. This is a pretty interesting action film and is worth a view if you come across it.
