Bogie56 Posted March 7 The Academy Award winning Journey of Hope (1990) Xavier Koller, Switzerland was number three on my list. It is just as relevant today as it was almost 30 years ago. It tells the tale of a family making a desperate journey from Turkey to Switzerland in the hope of a better life. Recommended.

Bogie56 Posted March 8 Korczak (1990) Andrzej Wajda, Poland. Wojciech Pszoniak stars as Janusz Korczak a selfless man who runs an orphanage in the Warsaw ghetto during the Nazi occupation in WWII. Its a good film with a tough subject matter.
Bogie56 Posted March 8 Ay, Carmela! (1990) by Calos Saura is about a troupe of actors travelling the country during the Spanish Civil War. Carmen Maura plays the lead. This was quite good too.
Bogie56 Posted March 8 Tatie Daniele (1990) by Etienne Chatiliez of France is an interesting but not completely successful film. Tsilla Chilton plays the title 'Auntie' who is a real mean old sod. She meets her match in the housekeeper of her nephew with whom she goes to live with. Chilton is quite good but the comedy is a bit out of balance. It's still worth a look.
Bogie56 Posted March 8 I saw Docteur Petiot (1990) for a second time not long ago and enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time. Michel Serrault plays the real life serial killer who in WWII occupied Paris offered to arrange passage for Jews to Argentina for a tidy sum. He then gave them lethal injections burned the bodies and robbed their unguarded homes. Serrault plays the role like a mad silent screen villain which some might find OTT but I liked. Recommended.

CoraSmith Posted March 9 A bit of attention for two French films: Flaubert's Madame Bovary has been adapted many times, but my favourite version remains the one by Claude Chabrol. Isabelle Huppert plays the role of the wife who doesn't see her romantic expectations fulfilled in a dull marriage. Jean-François Balmer plays the village doctor and unaware cuckold. Chabrol has a lot of attention for the social background and the environment and architecture in Normandy. My Father the Hero ("Mon père, ce héros") is a comedy with Gérard Depardieu. He plays André, a divorced father who takes his teen daughter on a beach holiday. The Belgian actress Marie Gillain plays his daughter Véronique. For fun she spreads the rumour that André isn't her father but her lover. She doesn't realize in how much trouble this gossip can bring him.
