Bogie56
Italy's Oscar winning Mediterraneo (1991) by Gabriele Salvatores is well worth a look. If nothing else it is a crowd pleaser. A small band of Italian soldiers in WWII are sent to garrison an idyllic Greek Island. Its the land of the lotus eaters but as you can well guess it is bound to become serious.
Bogie56
Max von Sydow and Stellan Skarsgard star in Sven Nykvist's The Ox (1991) which is anything but a cheery film. Skarsgard plays a tenant farmer who's family faces starvation one winter. He kills the estate owner's ox and gets caught. What happens to him next in the criminal justice system is pure horror show.
Bogie56
All I will say about The Old Lady Who Walked In the Sea (1991) by Laurent Heynemann is that it is about two older con artists played by Jeanne Moreau and Michel Serrault. Serrault is great. I tracked down a good vhs copy of this on ebay which had English subtitles. Recommended for fans of these actors.
Bogie56
Luc Besson's Atlantis (1991) picks up where Jacques Costeau left off. There may be some French text at the start but after that it is all classical music to montages of underwater oddities. I'm afraid to say that this is now a bit ho-hum when compared to David Attenborough's Blue Planet. That is the problem with older nature documentaries. And that is all that I have time for in the way of 1991 films. On to 1992 tomorrow!
