marshald25
It's nice to see TCM give Miriam Hopkins a night, a Friday night no less! It's too bad they're not showing some of her rarer Paramount films though, stuff like THE STORY OF TEMPLE DRAKE and 24 HOURS. I think Miriam's best performances came in THE SMILING LIEUTENANT and TROUBLE IN PARADISE. Lubitsch handled her great in those films. She wasn't a very subtle actress, and oftentimes she'd come across as being exaggerated and cold. I think Lubitsch's DESIGN FOR LIVING suffers from that, as do other films. path40a
I know very little about her and only just "discovered" her (and Merle Oberon) when I saw These Three about a year ago. Subsequently, I've seen her in The Smiling Lieutenant, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (interesting pronunciation of Jekyll too;-), Trouble in Paradise, Design for Living, The Old Maid (with Bette Davis), and The Children's Hour (remake of These Three). I have to say that I've enjoyed these movies, and have no idea what Bette Davis said about her (something was inferred in another post?), but she seems to have been a solid actress. I just found out from imdb something I didn't know before ... she was born in Bainbridge, GA ... not to far from here;-)
bansi4
I too enjoy some of the films starring Miriam Hopkins. She was indeed a good actress and added zest to such movies as "These Three", "The Heiress", "Old Aquaintance", "The Children's Hour" and "The Old Maid". Also I don't believe that Bette Davis was the easiest person (star) to get along with. Mongo
marshald25
I saw BECKY SHARP, and Miriam was really good! That role was right up her alley. She looked marvelous in color; loved her blue outfits. I was surprised at how intimate one of her scenes with Frances Dee was. Miriam has her face pressed next to Dee's and gives her a casual peck on the lips! That's the sort of scene that should have been included in THESE THREE! bansi4
It's apparent that we are not the only fans of Miriam Hopkins since prestigeous director William Wyler used her in five of his films which she fared in very well. He also was fond of Bette Davis as an actress and they had an affair after hours. Hollywood was just grand in those days. Mongo
cinemetal
Chalk me up as another major fan of Miriam Hopkins. To my estimation, she was one of the most skilled at running the gamut of personas from ditzy (The Heiress) to intense (These Three), from dowdy to ferociously sexual.
