I don't know these two. My post-silent era knowledge of German cinema is poor.

They sang in musicals. Frank Schobel was/ is known as "the Elvis of East Germany."

I'd say Audrey Tatou and Marion Cotillard from France's modern pool of talent.

I love both of them. I'm glad you mentioned them. Amelie and La Vie en Rose are particular favorites, as is A Very Long Engagement, featuring both of them.

Spain has given us Antonio Banderas as well as Penelope Cruz, who is particularly effective in All About My Mother.

I'd also add Javier Bardem. All About My Mother is very good, but I've enjoyed most Almodovar films that I've seen.

Lawrence, What an excellent idea for a thread with "Toshibo" leading the way.

Those two living Japanese actors, that you cited, are certainly two of my favorites as well-- Nakadai and Kitano.

I also like two more actors from Japan who are very much alive today:

Köji Yakusho and Naoto Takenaka-- both were outstanding in the International hit, Shall We Dance?

Wow - I had to back up to look at the photo of Setsuko Hara again. Scrolling down the first time I thought I'd caught an error in that Ashley Judd had mistakenly been included.

Ever since I saw 'The Ninth Gate' (1999), I've been fascinated with Emmanuelle Seigner.

All in all, I'd have to say that the most significant "foreign" actor ever is Max Von Sydow.

Daniel Auteuil is one of the most daring and gutsy actors that I've ever seen from any continent.

Also unique from France is the stylized Fabrice Luchini.

With Gerald Depardieu at the top, they make up the big three male actors for me from France.

My favorite movie with Auteuil and Depardieu is Jean de Florette from Marcel Pagnol.

My favorite with Fabrice Luchini and Depardieu is Colonel Chabert from Balzac.

This is something I never gave much thought about.  I might, after some thought, come up with a few I like that appeared in American made movies, and maybe a few foreign films as I don't usually view too many of them.  But we shall see...
