dsclassic
I am going to see these soon and wondered what if anyone had seen them & could recommend or not recommend them
Arkadin
Both are amazing films. LE SAMOURAI is basically a reworking of THIS GUN FOR HIRE (1942), but much better in my opinion than the original film. LE CERCLE ROUGE is a heist film. Both feature Alain Delon in the lead and are directed by Melville. I would reccomend you start with SAMOURAI as it's a bit easier to get into. The visuals and colors are stunning and there is very little dialogue--it almost plays like a silent film.
Terry_W
After you see these you may want to check out Truffaut's "Shoot The Piano Player" (1960), Godard's "Breathless" (1962) and "Band Of Outsiders" (1964) and, the heist film of all time, Jules Dassin's "Rififi" (1955). Rififi actually precedes new wave but Le Cercle Rouge pays tribute to it in a key scene. If you haven't already, it wouldn't hurt to take a look at "The Asphalt Jungle" (1950). "The Asphalt Jungle" shows up frequently on TCM and Breathless has been playing on The Sundance Channel of late. -- Terry Wallace

Rodbob
Check out Melville's last film, Le Flic aka Dirty Money, with Richard Crenna. A nice way to end his career!
