Age consensus

Howdy, I'm new here and just wanted to get a basic idea of whom I'm consorting with here. Age is rarely a concern of mine in discussing the arts, but I have to confess having great admiration for people whose appreciation of cinema and other arts precedes the immediacy of their own timeframe. To wit: I am 26 but my appreciation of film goes right back to King Vidor, Chaplin, Browning and Lubitsch. And it has since youth, when my good ol' pop (born 1930) regaled me with childhood cinema tales of Errol Flynn, James Cagney and Sonny Tufts (don't ask!). And still, that backward-looking good sense doesn't mean I am not a big fan of Steven Soderbergh, Spike Lee and Cameron Crowe, again, to name but a few. Ye regs and guests, please drop a few pertinent lines here so that I can get to know you lot better. Thanks.

Well, cinemetal, my handle says it all. I'm 38, female (gal), from St. Louis (stl), Missouri, USA. Although the "l" looks like an "I" - so I answer to stigal, stig.. you name it.

I enjoy your posts. You have competence in a broad gamut of films and you write very well.

Welcome aboard.

Not to worry cinemetal since we range in all ages covering all era's of filmmaking. I believe I'm the old **** of the group or not far from it. We have those raging from their teens and into their seventies which covers a mass knowledge of the movies.

We are ALL film buffs and we love motion pictures and it's grand movie stars.

Just read some of the many topics and you'll feel right at home on these boards which are the best in town.

Any town U.S.A.

Just sit back, relax, enjoy and welcome aboard.

Welcome cinemetal! I'm still relatively new here myself. I think you will find, as I did, that this is a wonderful forum for classic movie buffs. The members are kind and always willing to answer any questions or give suggestions. As to your question about the age thing, I ran across the thread "TCM's average viewer is 55?" a few days ago and found that a handful of members mention how old they are in their posts.

Have fun!

Well, to put it simply, I like the idea of chatting with people who are relatively younger. On far too many an occasion, even here in the very cultured NYC, I find myself to be the youngest person at a silent or 1930s film screening, often separated by a twenty- or thirty-year margin from the next youngest person. Frankly, I get a kick out of teens and twenty-somethings discussing Norma Shearer as readily as many of our peers might discuss Kate Hudson.

Personally I think you are really limiting yourself by wanting to chat with only "younger" people--hate to say it but it seems rather shallow to me. I myself never even think about how old the people are in this forum. What is age but a number?? Does it mean a person is less "hip" or "in" because they are "older"?? Age doesn't define a person. I feel this way about people in general in the "real" world also. Hell, my grandmother is one of my closest friends (she has more energy than I have!). All of my friends that are around my age (I'm 32 b.t.w) aren't into classic movies. That's fine with me. They are missing out in my opinion. When I come to this forum and post messages, play trivia etc. I do it because I share a love of classic movies with these people. And I've learned a lot too. Maybe you should worry less about age and care more about getting to know the wonderful people who frequent this forum.

How ironic this should be the top topic this morning, as I have an update: I am 39 today. But thankfully unable to change my name.

Yeah age ain't nothin but a number especially in this medium. I go for content.

It is kinda nice to have an idea of who your talking to but I don't make that a 'deciding' or 'rule-out' factor.

Hey now, no need to get too feisty, ye all! I don't intend to underscore the importance of age TOO much. After all, it was elder family members, friends and writers who inspired me to get into classic films in the first place. But, like I said, I do get a very general kick out of the sort of folks, like you all, whose appreciation of the flicker pictures far outstrips the ordinary threshold.
