misswonderly3
Well, no Elton John today, but the following is a bit of an allusion to another kind of mad man. Roy Orbison and his tragic voice. What a guy. Remember nutty Dennis Hopper and his obsession with this song (among others) in *Blue Velvet* ? Here it be:
DownGoesFrazier
Ipod update. ----I am gradually building my ipod. I'm now up to 68 songs, and I'm already promoting it as the "world's hippest retro ipod".The guy who's uploading the songs for me agrees. I'm using it without headphones in my gym's spinning room, just like the spinning instructors. In effect, I'm conducting a spinning class with nobody in the class.,
lavenderblue19
MissW- don't know if you've seen the episode of Don moving to his apartment, Betty on the plane to Reno, and the kids and the dog sadly watching tv, and there's the great Roy Orbison singing Shahdaroba. One of the greatest match up's of a tv episode and a song, ever. misswonderly3
I have seen it. I am now halfway through season five. And yes, I did take note of that Roy O. tune. It may be what put that fine singer in my mind, these last few days. But I didn't want to be a complete copy cat of the show, tempting though that is, as it certainly plays a lot of good music, especially on its end credits. misswonderly3
Yup, that's a fun version...but it makes me crave the original. Here be "Shocking Blue" with Venus. (edit) Actually, upon a second viewing, the Bananarama version is hilarious! And, I think, intentionally so. Anyway, when you see the singer in the original, you'll wonder if Chrissy Hynde saw this. It's like an earlier, less cool version of Chrissy's look.) Aaaah aahahhhaaaahahhhaahahhhh (spelling may be somewhat incorrect.) CaveGirl
Miss W, OTOV is a fun film! Speaking of Donovan, have you ever seen "Don't Look Back" that tour film about Bob Dylan by the Maysles Brothers? I'm sure you've seen it. It has thatgreat scene in the hotel with Donovan kind of competing with Bob in playing for the friends and visitors. He looks starstruck when Mister Zimmerman sings I think It's All Over Now Baby Blue after he does his bit. I think he must have started smoking something after that and Mellow Yellow was the result. Oops forgot...my favorite soundtrack is from the film Badlands. Edited by: CaveGirl on Sep 21, 2013 5:17 PM
misswonderly3
I have a confession to make. I am thick as a brick when it comes to deciphering acronyms or even just initials. So, I am embarrassed to admit this, but I don't know what film OTOV refers to. (Or as the snooty pretentious lady who served tea and buns at the train station in "Brief Encounter" says, "I'm sure I don't know to what you are referring.") Yer gonna hafta spell it out for me, CaveGirl, baby. Yup, I own a copy of *Don't Look Back*. And yes, that scene with Donovan and Dylan is a leetle awkward. I do feel kind of bad for Mr. Leitch, but I'm sure he got over it. I'm feeling autumnish today (or is it "autumnal"?) And even though this is technically a summer song, for some reason I always associate it with autumn. Love Johnny Mercer's evocative lyrics, and the hot band backing Frank up in this. Those swirling horns that kind of agree with everything the Voice is saying make me feel like I'm as cool as Frank himself...at least while I'm listening to this song. DownGoesFrazier
I've been doing a lot of youtube research for the purpose of selecting songs for my ipod, and I've become reacquainted with the vastly underrated Jean Carne. LIsten to "Was That All it Was" and "Don't Let it Go to Your Head". Soul/disco delights, both of which easily make the cut for me.
misswonderly3
Glad you're enjoying your new iPod, fi. Two very different versions of a great old song, "Lullaby of the Leaves": Benny Goodman: just an instrumental, kind of snappy Mary Hopkin: very dreamy : (Whenever I have this song, "Lullaby of the Leaves", going through my head, it always segues into "This Masquerade".) DownGoesFrazier
My ipod is now at 170 songs, virtually all of which I'd rate an A+. I feel that if I did more, I'd be dropping down to just "A" rated songs, and that's just not good enough, so, for the time being I'm going to quit adding......The breakdown is, approximately 73 soul or disco, 63 classic rock, and 44 new wave. The earliest song is the Stones' "Paint it Black" (1966), and the latest is the Cure's "Lovesong" (1989).

misswonderly3
This is a big salad for finance, not me. I merely posted a song that he mentioned he thought was good enough to include in his iPod collection. I must find out more about The Cure...sounds like a good place to start is that album, "Disintegration". Wonder if it can still be had on CD. darkblue
If you're going to own only one album by The Cure, that is definitely the one. DownGoesFrazier
Actually, there is a second 1966 song on my ipod, "Over Under Sideways Down" by the Yardbirds. Smack in the middle of the London mod scene.

traceyk65
I recently read an article about re-evaluating certain 90 bands, like Tori Amos and Toad the Wet Sproket (both of whom I like). That made me think of other bands which led me around to The Smithereens (which are an 80's band, but no matter) To me they are sort of quintessential 80's alternative--not too punk, but not too pop-py (so to speak). Anyway, they are one of my favorites. "Strangers When We Meet" : "Blues Before and After" : Covering "It Don't Come Easy" :
