missW, an interesting tidbit of trivia since a lot of us have been thinking about Doris Day lately - Terry Melcher, Doris Day's son, produced Mr. Tambourne Man and Turn, Turn, Turn for the Byrds. Terry Melcher was a staff producer at Columbia and worked with some of the greats including The Byrds.

That's right, Terry Melcher was a music producer. He also worked with the Beach Boys.

I remember being amazed when I heard he was Doris Day's son...I don't really know why. Musical mother, musical son. Makes sense.

Sadly, Terry died in 2004. His mother out-lives him.

Thanks for the reminder of the Doris connection, lav. :)

Coincidentally, I've just started the book "Helter Skelter", about the Manson killings, and Melcher had been the prior occupant of 10500 Cielo Drive. In fact, the killings may have occurred because Manson had it in for Melcher.......(See my respose to you on the Beatles Thread :) ).

That's a well known story. Terry Melcher refused to produce Manson's music, Manson had it in for him for that reason. At the time Melcher and Candace Bergen were living together at that house. They had moved out before the tragedy occurred and rented the house. Sharon Tate and her friends were there at the time. Maniac Manson had told his followers to kill anyone who was there. He didn't know Terry Melcher and Candace had moved out. Doris and Terry after that were given protection from the police for quite awhile. After all this and Manson's arrest the house was destroyed. Very frightening story.

>That rather inferior rendition of 'Candy-O' got me instantly craving some >Cars tracks.

I like the Cars too. I didn't mean that the Melvins are better (in fact, that sort of music isn;t my thing at all), I just found the Shirley Temple connection interesting. Lori apparently took her mothers musical talent in an entirely different direction.

Ah, talk about a "yearning" song.  Hey, why is "Emily" such a favourite name with poets and songwriters?

Here's another kind of "yearning" song. Sorry about all this "yearning" business, but the word captures a certain emotion that a lot of music evokes. It's a particular kind of music that I love, especially when in a melancholy /nostalgic mood.

Anyway, I know this one's been posted here before (quite recently, I think, by darkblue.) But although I liked it, I think its quality passed by me. I heard it again recently on the radio (CBC, dark...), and this time I was not distracted by the images of the video. I thought, "What a fantastic song !"

Sometimes I think it's good to just hear the music without any visuals. So I deliberately picked a video of the song that just has these abstract colours, so you can concentrate on the music. Great song, I love it.

This is all intriguing, but I did know an Emily back in HS who was anything but kind.   Pretty?  Yes, but a very calculating heart.   I don't think time had changed her at all.

This is for all the guys and gals out there who still hope that love is there to illuminate the dark clouds in their lives.  May you finally find each other.

Laura Nyro also did a song called "Emily".

Multi-Eye, I see you're a Johnny Cash fan. Here's one of his latter-day recordings. Very moody and mysterious sounding. A "traditional" song, which usually means, really really good.

Thanks for the shout out. I've heard pretty much everything by Mr. Johnny Cash & I'm only in my 20's. What a great choice for his later years. Neil Young & Crazy Horse just released a great cover of that song.

In a way that would take too long and be too wordy to go into here (hey, there's a good excuse to avoid explaining myself !), I feel there's some kind of connection, musical and emotional, between Johnny Cash and a band called The National. Well, Johnny Cash's music has a connection to many musicians who followed him, of course. As he connected to music that went before him.

Anyway, there's this fantastic new-ish (not really very new, just compared to a lot of the people we post here) band called The National. I am furious to say, I could not get tickets to see them this week - they're playing in Toronto at Massey Hall - three nights in a row. But by the time I found this out, all three shows were already sold out! That's how appreciated they are.

So in acknowledgement of the shows in Toronto I'm missing, I'm going to post a song (or two) by them here.

This is one of their older ones, but it's so good. "Lit Up" :

I find the video a little distracting. I actually tried to find a youtube link of this song without a video, just maybe a pic of the album cover. But no luck. I often find that a music video takes my attention away a bit from the music I'm trying to listen to, with the visuals. All the music I've come to love and make a part of my life, I've gotten to know by just listening to it, no videos or visuals.
