Sorry to be all surly but if some of you conservatives hadn't been so consistently nit-picky and vicious to Obama at the time, we might not be in this situation today.

Criticism of him was often wildly unfair and,

yes, racially tinged at the best of times.

Hard to tell what Lusztig is talking about;   E.g. what is 'this situation'?      Trump as President?

If Trump as President is 'this situation',  I fail to see the connection between: if conservatives had been less critical and vicious towards Obama,  how that would have prevented Trump from becoming the GOP nominee and beating Clinton.

Interesting that Obama isn't endorsing Diana Feinstein.    OK the other candidate is also a Dem,  but Feinstein is one of the leading Dems in the Senate.     I wonder if she feels dished  (she clearly felt that way when the CA Dem committee endorsed her opponent).

The 7 most important moments in Obama’s blistering critique of Trump and the GOP

“It did not start with Donald Trump.”

........“Demagogues promise simple fixes to complex problems”

Obama criticized Trump and Republicans more directly than he ordinarily would, but he still placed the current politics of resentment — the coded racial language, the dehumanizing of the Other, and the fear-mongering in what is actually the safest time in recent history to live in America — in a grander historical context.

“America’s dark history of racial and ethnic and religious division,” Obama said, is a tale “as old as time.” And he heavily implied that Trump follows in those demagogic footsteps:.......

“What happened to the Republican Party?”

Republicans passed a tax bill that exploded the deficit by $1.5 trillion, Obama noted. Anti-communism used to be the rallying cry of the conservative, pro-capitalism movement in America and yet now they seem perfectly comfortable with Putin, a holdover Soviet spy, running Russia. Or they’re at least willing to ignore Trump’s comfort with him.........

The proud policy wonk of a president couldn’t help but add a policy critique, praising emerging Democratic proposals like Medicare-for-all or giving workers seat on corporate boards — a rhetorical embrace of a much more leftist politics than Obama himself ever pursued in office. .......

He called on people of all parties to be properly offended by the resurgence of white nationalism in mainstream politics or the appeasement of neo-Nazis by the president of the United States and people close to him.

“We’re supposed to stand up to discrimination, and we’re sure as heck supposed to stand up clearly and unequivocally to Nazi sympathizers,” Obama said. “How hard can that be? Saying that Nazis are bad?”.......

"... the point that is essential to American democracy is that in a government of and by and for the people, there should be no permanent ruling class. There are only citizens, who through their elected and temporary representatives, determine our course and determine our character. I’m here today because this is one of those pivotal moments when every one of us as citizens of the United States need to determine just who it is that we are. "

Steph Curry says Obama has invited him to go play golf but he's too busy to accept

Even during the NBA offseason, Stephen Curry doesn't have enough time to play golf, no matter who is inviting him to play.

Curry told Bill Simmons on "The Bill Simmons Podcast" that former President Barack Obama has invited him to play golf, but he doesn't have the time to make it out to the East coast to play.

"Barack, if you're listening, I appreciate the invite. It's not that I don't want to be there, it's that I literally just can't," Curry said.

***********************************************

Obama must be getting desperate for people to play with.

Pretty incredible how a speech in which the hardest hitting arguments are "don't use DOJ to target your political enemies"

and "stand up to Nazis" is a searing indictment of the sitting president.

No more incredible than a young daughter's emotional and heartfelt eulogy to her famous beloved father is deemed a searing indictment of the sitting president.

It looks as though the Oval Office has a really big Orange snowflake in it.

Kinda corny, isn't it? Especially now as we live in a Klingon society.

But ... we can try, we can at least try.

Obama looked dazed and jaded during his speech, and afterwords probably went out and hit the golf links. He is the last person who should be preaching to the choir, as he did nothing for his 8 years in office. Even his Presidential Library is a fiasco, and he can't blame Trump for that mess.

Maybe he's still dazed over the fact that Trump couldn't condemn Nazi sympathizers.
