Obama to mayors on coronavirus:

"The biggest mistake any us can make in these situations is to misinform"

Former President Barack Obama addressed a group of mayors organized by Bloomberg Philanthropies on Thursday, telling the group that “the biggest mistake any us can make in these situations is to misinform."

“Speak the truth. Speak it clearly. Speak it with compassion. Speak it with empathy for what folks are going through,” Obama said, according to a press release on the virtual meeting.

Obama also pushed the mayors to bring in as many smart advisers and experts as possible.

“The more smart people you have around you, and the less embarrassed you are to ask questions, the better your response is going to be,” Obama said. .............

Obama pans Wisconsin 'debacle,' backs vote-by-mail efforts amid pandemic

........"No one should be forced to choose between their right to vote and their right to stay healthy like the debacle in Wisconsin this week,” Obama tweeted, sharing a New York Times article. ......

"Everyone should have the right to vote safely, and we have the power to make that happen. This shouldn't be a partisan issue,” Obama wrote in another tweet..........

Obama has weighed in multiple times amid the pandemic, emphasizing this week that "a robust system of testing and monitoring" will be needed to safely reopen the country and warning mayors against spreading misinformation amid the crisis.........

I’m proud to endorse my friend

for President of the United States. Let's go:

For all of us who love this country and are willing to do our part to make sure it lives up to its highest ideals – now’s the time to fight for what we believe in.

Join us at http://JoeBiden.com. And I’ll see you on the campaign trail as soon as I can.

Obama endorses Biden for president in video message

.........continues: "The kind of leadership that's guided by knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace -- that kind of leadership doesn't just belong in our state capitols and mayors offices. It belongs in the White House."

"And that's why I'm so proud to endorse Joe Biden for President of the United States," he adds.......

Obama also spoke directly to progressives, praising the spirit of their movement before outlining why he believes they should embrace Biden's candidacy. The former president also offered full-throated praise of Sanders and noted what his candidacy has meant for the pursuit of liberal ideals.

"Bernie's an American original -- a man who has devoted his life to giving voice to working people's hopes, dreams, and frustrations. He and I haven't always agreed on everything, but we've always shared a conviction that we have to make America a fairer, more just, more equitable society," Obama says.

The former president also offered some of his most direct criticism yet of his successor without calling Trump out by name.
"One thing everybody has learned by now is that the Republicans occupying the White House and running the US Senate are not interested in progress," Obama says. "They're interested in power."......

argues that the President and Senate Republicans have repeatedly "disregarded American principles of rule of law, and voting rights, and transparency," and have been helped by "a propaganda network with little regard for the truth," seemingly a knock against Fox News.........

Obama, Endorsing Biden, Says Obama Policies Aren’t Good Enough Now

“You know, I could not be prouder of the incredible progress that we made together during my presidency,” Obama said in a video released Tuesday morning, in which he endorsed Joe Biden. “But if I were running today, I wouldn’t run the same race or have the same platform as I did in 2008.”

He added that now is not the time to simply “tinker around the edges with tax credits or underfunded programs.”

While it’s important to “protect the gains we made with the Affordable Care Act,” he said, “it’s also time to go further.

We should make plans affordable for everyone, provide everyone with a public option, expand Medicare, and finish the job so that health care isn’t just a right, but a reality for everybody.”..........

“We have to return the U.S. to the Paris agreement and lead the world in reducing the pollution that causes climate change,” he said

. “But science tells us we have to go much further—that it’s time for us to accelerate progress on bold new green initiatives that make our economy a clean energy innovator, save us money, and secure our children’s future.”........

If Obama was emphasizing in his video that it’s not enough to return to the policies of the Obama administration, it’s because the video was more than just an endorsement of Joe Biden. It was his first pitch-in to the cause of party unification. .........

“We both know that nothing is more powerful than millions of voices calling for change,” Obama said. “And the ideas he’s championed, the energy and enthusiasm he inspired, especially in young people, will be critical in moving America in a direction of progress and hope. Because for the second time in 12 years, we’ll have the incredible task of rebuilding our economy. And to meet the moment, the Democratic Party will have to be bold.”

Obama also delivered perhaps his choicest words against President Donald Trump, and the Trump administration, since leaving office.........

".....So our country’s future hangs on this election. And it won’t be easy. The other side has a massive war chest. The other side has a propaganda network with little regard for the truth. On the other hand, pandemics have a way of cutting through a lot of noise and spin to remind us of what is real and what is important. This crisis has reminded us that government matters. It’s reminded us that good government matters. That facts and science matter. That the rule of law matters. That having leaders who are informed and honest and seek to bring people together rather than drive them apart—those kind of leaders matter."

No, he’s not at the point where he will actually use Trump’s name as the idiot to whom he’s referring.

But it’s only April. Welcome to the party.

Well in CA we do not need more of this;  as in leadership from the Federal government.      The reason should be obvious.    Anyhow expecting such leadership will be sadly disappointed if not dead.      This is why I like how Governor Newsom has handled this crisis.    He took charge:  E.g. implementing the social distancing order and closing non-essential businesses before the state of NY did),   as well as assisting counties with the purchasing of PPEs,   respirators,   (which CA is letting the NY and other Northeastern states borrow since CA has excess capacity),    etc...

In addition Newsom has not criticized Trump or members of his admin since he knows that CA still has to depend on somethings from the Feds and he knows that Trump is so immature he would order his minions to retaliate.

Hoping for a coherent national plan isn't being wise.

Obama: ‘Rule of Law Is at Risk’ After DOJ Moved to Drop Charges Against Flynn

".......Obama reportedly said, “The fact that there is no precedent that anybody can find for someone who has been charged with perjury just getting off scot-free. That’s the kind of stuff where you begin to get worried that basic—not just institutional norms—but our basic understanding of rule of law is at risk.” The reference, he explained, was intended as an invocation of urgency in the upcoming election.

He also called the Trump administration’s approach containing the new coronavirus pandemic “an absolute chaotic disaster.”........

Obama in private call says Trump's coronavirus response has been an 'absolute chaotic disaster': CNN

.............."This election that's coming up — on every level — is so important because what we're going to be battling is not just a particular individual or a political party," Obama said, according to CNN. "What we're fighting against is these long-term trends in which being selfish, being tribal, being divided and seeing others as an enemy — that has become a stronger impulse in American life."......

"It's part of the reason why the response to this global crisis has been so anemic and spotty," Obama said. "It would have been bad even with the best of governments.

It has been an absolute chaotic disaster when that mindset of 'what's in it for me' and 'to heck with everybody else' ... is operationalized in our government."

"That's why, I, by the way, am going to be spending as much time as necessary and campaigning as hard as I can for Joe Biden," he added..........

To bad Obama didn't have the same insight when he was President that he has now.
Barack Obama has agreed to preserve the Senate’s landmark investigation into the CIA’s use of torture after 9/11, but his decision ensures that the document remains out of public view for at least 12 years and probably longer.

The full Senate torture report, which documented brutality by the CIA against at least 119 detained terrorism suspects, will be held out of public view at Obama’s presidential library.

Obama's Legacy of Impunity for Torture

The 44th president’s decision to “look forward” has enabled Donald Trump to look backward and appoint a torture backer to run the CIA.

Much has been made of President Trump’s disregard for rules and norms—boundaries delineated by ethics and morality if not written laws themselves. But transgressing laws, rules, and norms isn’t the only way to destroy them. Another way is simply not to enforce them.

In that regard, the 44th president, Barack Obama, bears a measure of responsibility for the recklessness of his successor, in particular Trump’s decision to appoint Gina Haspel, the Central Intelligence Agency’s deputy director, to run the agency itself. Haspel oversaw a black site during the Bush era where at least one detainee, Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, was tortured.

Obama takes thinly-veiled (?) swipe at Trump during commencement address-

Former President Barack Obama was the featured speaker on Saturday at virtual commencement ceremonies for students graduating from 74 historically black colleges and universities.

“You’re being asked to find your way in the world in the middle of a devastating pandemic and terrible recession. The timing is not ideal,” Obama said,.........

“More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that the folks in charge know what they’re doing,” Obama said.

“A lot of them aren’t even pretending to be in charge. ”........

As all 50 states begin the process of reopening, here are three articles that offer some lessons from other countries about the tradeoffs and policies involved.

First, here’s what European nations have done to support workers:

South Korea has focused on testing to guard against outbreaks:

And here’s more on the approach Sweden has taken, which differs from some of its neighbors:

My statement on the death of George Floyd:

This statement can only hurt Biden get elected;    Obama and Biden lead the executive branch for 8 years and clearly failed to create this "new normal" Obama mentions.    Of course this is an unfair assessment but it will be convincing to many black Americans;     Depended on Biden to make happen what he,  along with a black President couldn't make happen over 8 years?        Why even vote,,,, the system is rigged against us!

Obama pens essay on using George Floyd protests as 'turning point for real change'

Former President Obama wrote in an essay published Monday that the protests sweeping the nation in response to the death of George Floyd have the opportunity to represent a "turning point for real change" as long as activists channel their anger into "peaceful, sustained, and effective action."

"If we want our criminal justice system, and American society at large, to operate on a higher ethical code, then we have to model that code ourselves," he wrote, adding that the "point of protest is to raise public awareness, to put a spotlight on injustice, and to make the powers that be uncomfortable."

Obama's essay in Medium was published the day after largely peaceful protests Sunday erupted into violent clashes between some demonstrators and police in several cities that night. News cameras caught people looting stores in Santa Monica, while fires were set in Washington, D.C., near the White House.

Obama said that the widespread protests signified the "genuine and legitimate frustration" from the African American community. But he stressed the need to ensure that the demonstrations were orchestrated in a peaceful manner and that the movement continued with broad pushes to elect reform-minded public officials. ...........

The reason former presidents Barack Obama and George W Bush are speaking out so publicly for the first time in 3 1/2 years is because they feel the American public needs their reassurance and positive motivation for the survival of the nation  in the midst of these multiple crisis because the current president

can't do the job,

refuses to do the job and

isn't even up to the job.

Real change requires protest to highlight a problem, and politics to implement practical solutions and laws.

As I mentioned yesterday in our @MBK_Alliance

town hall, there are several steps our mayors and elected officials can take right now:

First, there are specific evidence-based reforms that would build trust, save lives, and lead to a decrease in crime, too.

You can find clear, actionable recommendations right here:

https://www.obama.org/anguish-and-action/

Second, every mayor should review their use of force policies with members of their community and commit to report on planned reforms. We need mayors, county executives, and those in positions of power to make this a priority

https://www.obama.org/mayor-pledge/

Third, every city in this country should be a

community. We have 250 cities, counties, and tribal nations working to reduce barriers and expand opportunity for boys and young men of color.
