iburnttheboys
Im stuck in a dead end college and theres no way out. here's my story: At the beginning of my senior year in high school, everyone was called to thier counsolers office to discuss thier future in college and career. I was really excited about all this because I needed help on figuring out what to do. I knew alot about movies cars and music from the 1900's and up. Well, everytime I got called to my counseler she was "sick". So I went to the office a total of 7 times that year trying to see her. It came to April and I did'nt know it was too late to register in any college but a community college. So I did, and being confused as I was, I enrolled in a community college for auto mechanics. Everyone told me "you dont need to know anything about cars to take this course." and that was bull because I dropped all my auto mechanics courses because I didnt know what the teacher was talking about. So I entered into associates in art and college transfer to NC state. Now, I feel so lost because Im trying to be a journalist but they dont have a journalism course at NC state, so I was going to take creative writing. I don't now if im going the right way and I feel that from the time It was too late to enroll in good colleges (which was my own stupidity I should of known better). I really want a career in journalism as a film critic but I dont know if im going the right way. Anyone have any advice?
stellabluegrl
First of all I don't think you should beat yourself up for the choices you made in the past. Everyone makes "mistakes" that they regret later. It's up to you as to how you go about either learning from the mistake, doing something about it, or putting it behind you because nothing can be done. This is a very personal thing. People can offer advice, but in the end you must decide which is the right path for you. From what you said in your post, the only advice I can give you is to speak with your counselor at the college you are currently attending and explain the situation. If it ends up you have to go to a different college that would better suit your goals, then that may be what you have to do. Again, this is your choice to make. Remember though, you can always change your mind......nothing is set in stone. If you find journalism isn't your thing try something else. It's never too late to make a new start. Good Luck and best wishes... ~*~Stella~*~

classicsfan1119
Considering that you are asking people here for advice concerning becoming a Journalist/Movie Critic, perhaps you might pick a well-known movie, critique it, and allow a few people here I can think of who have done the same kind of thing, to offer you some guidance or suggestions that will help you make up your mind about what to persue and how to pursue it. Just a thought (smile).
iburnttheboys
All of that was good advice. Thank you so much all of these posts helped me. I geuss submitting a test review on a movie would be a good idea. Maybe we could make a game out of it on the forum where people submit thier reviews and then we all write what we thought of the review. I would feel more comfortable that way. but anywho thanks for the help! -Mary-
cinemetal
Start writing reviews/essays/criticism in your spare time and then, when you feel your critical edge and grammatical skills are up to snuff, farm out your talent to local magazines and newspapers. Get some feedback along the way. For the record, the term is "should've" (as an abbreviated form of "should have"), not the much-mistaken "should of," which is clearly a bastardized translation from how it sounds. Oh, and "critique" is not a verb, only a noun. Just tryin' to be helpful!
stellabluegrl
Actually cinemetal "critique" may be used as a transitive verb.
classicsfan1119
Mary, it was not my intention to turn a movie you might chose to "critique" into a game on these boards. I thought, and perhaps was misguided by an eagerness to help you choose a career that is correct for you to pursue, that one of several people who are honestly qualified to judge your work on our boards would lend you some guidance/advice that would put you on the right track to even knowing if a career in Journalism as a Movie Critic is what you will realistically be able to achieve. It might also be best if you were to continue to try to sit down with a school counselor and expore your options and what would be required of you in the field of Journalism, rather that do as I previously suggested and see if anyone here could/would give you appropriate guidance.
