marshald25
It's great seeing TCM honor Una's birthday with a day of her films! I love Una! She was pretty, funny, a great talent. Too bad she didn't get an opportunity to star in many films as the main female character. Seems like she always plays a friend.
path40a
Her name was familiar, but I couldn't offhand think of a film she was in that I'd seen. So glad I looked her up: http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0580916/bio I've seen a handful of her films. Ironically, she wasn't nominated for an Oscar until practically her last film after more than 30 years of working. Thanks!
classicsfan1119
I'm watching "Have a Heart" as I'm writing this. What a delight! I think this might also be the first time that I've ever seen Una Merkel. She's terrific!
alix1929
Thank you for mentioning one of my favorite stars. Yes, she did seem to be relegated to the role of best friend, but didn't she do it well?? She was excellent with the snappy comeback and had a voice that you always remembered. I always tune into any movie that I see she's acting in because I always enjoy her performance.
marshald25
I'm tempted to buy The Bat Whispers on Milestone DVD just to see Una in a lead role!
catcarson123
I've always liked Una Merkel, especially in comedy roles. I love her in DESTRY RIDES AGAIN, but I didn't care much for THE BAT WHISPERS. It had some interesting camera shots, but it was a pretty early talkie and this was before Una merkel was the funny Una Merkel that I like so much. alix1929
Buy THE BAT WHISPERS, but not for Una Merkel. She plays more of a straight role, and isn't the funny Una most of us love. However, Catcarson is correct--the camera shots are pretty good for an early 1930's release. Don't expect four-star entertainment, though.
