bio47
I love the bacstage stories. I would love to share mine because it still bewilders me to this day. Secrets and Lies directed by Mike Leigh. They worked without much of a script. The two female leads were not to meet nor know who each was prior to filmin a certain scene. Brenda Blythen (sic) gets a call from her daughter she gave up at birth. Mike Leigh wanted them to meet and capture the most authentic moment he could on screen. He told each actress, the other being Marie Jean Baptiste (sic again) to meet at a certain intersection and stand on a very busy sidewalk during rush hour and he gave them no clues. This went on for over two hours. Finally Baptiste goes up to Brenda and says "are you looking by chance for Hortence?" The look on Blythen's face followed by Marie's is priceless. They remained in character and to this day, I don't know how. Marie is black. Brenda, white. What a trick. Then Brenda without a script realizes she put the daughter up for adoption for being raped. I find it incredible. Share yours.
