The First Film That Comes to Mind...

PATHS OF GLORY (1957)

In this film I love that the principals speak with a variety of American accents that indicate their class standing. Top-ranked Adolphe Menjou speaks like an over-educated East Coast elite. Mid-level officers Kirk Douglas and Wayne Morris speak like middle-class mid-westerners. The grunts, Timothy Carey, Joe Turkel and Ralph Meeker speak like working-class Brooklynites. Their acting and Kubrick's direction are brilliant. What a movie.

Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943)

giphy.gif

  • the climactic Monster and Wolf Man fight lasts about 45 seconds
  • the Wolf Man does not bite the Monster (the essence of the Wolf Man, a big part of his fearsomeness, is the biting and "ripping throats out")
  • in physical appearance and mannerisms, Lugosi and his stunt double are extremely dissimilar, it makes the fight look so lame
  • Dr. Mannering (Patric Knowles) apparently gets a pass for going temporarily mad and restoring the Monster to "full power"
  • Varzec (Rex Evans) has some skin in the game by virtue of TWM killing his daughter, but is his dynamiting of the dam a heroic act or an ecological disaster?
  • The Monster survived multiple years submerged in sulphur pits and frozen in ice, or plaster, and is supposed to be killed in a flood/building collapse? Be serious

Next: great title, lousy movie
