otterhere
My VCR missed the beginning of this one: soldier went off to war (WW1?) to impress town "belle"; they marry just before he goes away for three years; when he returns, he learns her parents have annulled the marriage and she's (unhappily) remarried. She begins an affair with him to spite her current husband, but has become hard and untrustworthy and, besides, "The Order" (reminiscent of the ****???) is hassling them for immoral behavior, so he ends up with an Ellis Island immigrant whom he grows to love. There's some subplot in there about the young daughter of a friend who ends up committing suicide; I never quite figured out this storyline.... Anyone know?
