msladysoul
I'm hearing stories about Lena Horne and Ava Gardner having a affair. I'm just not hearing of Horne supposed lesbian sexuality. I hear that's why Sinatra didn't like Horne, Sinatra usually liked Black people, but he didn't like Lena, probably because her and Lena had an affair. When you look at Lena and how she swoons when she talks about Ava, just can see something there. In one of her albums she dedicates a song to Ava and says I had many girlfriends in my life, but my favorite was Ava Gardner. I don't know. But I'm not surprised. I'm also hearing Tallulah Bankhead and Billie Holiday had an affair. I know Tallulah liked women and had Black women. I don't know if all this is true. But, only God and they know. We can only think and talk. Also, Some of you may not like what I'm going to say but I don't know about you all but everytime I see Ava Gardner, her beauty shows a lot of ethnic features. She doesn't look like the other white beauties and to me she doesn't have those "white" features. She doesn't have the white beauty that Betty Grable, Veronica Lake, Ann Sheridan, Esther Williams, Lana Turner, Donna Reed and other white women had. When I look at Ava I see Black and Spanish features. Who knows maybe she inherited from past generations of her family who may have been a different race. Lena Horne and Dorothy Dandridge has white blood in them from past generations and it shows. And mind you Ava did play a mulatto in ShowBoat, so to the studio she looked ethnic to play that part. When I look at her she reminds me of a black actress by the name of Fredi Washington, she was in the movie Imitation of Life with Claudette Colbert. But we will never know of Ava's past. But that's why she was called the most beautfiul woman i the world because she didn't look like the other white beauties, she was different looking for a white lady. What do you all think? Myrna Loy played a lot of ethnic groups in her early career. She has a few ethnic features, and Gene Tierney to has some ethnic features to me- and it seems Hollywood called women like Hedy Lamarr, Rita Hayworth Ava Gardner, Gene Tierney, the most beautiful women in Hollywood because of their different beauty, they were women who were foreign, miniorities, and who had different ethnic features outside their race. But I would like all your point of views.
daddysprimadonna
Ava Gardner and Hedy Lamarr were famous for their "magnolia" white skin, and Rita Hayworth wasn't considered beautiful until she was "de-ethnicised" with electrolysis of her hairline, and lightening of her hair. There were some beautiful minority women in Hollywood who never got their full due, because of the climate of the times, but it takes more than being a brunette to be "ethnic". Ava was from a Southern family of Scots Irish ancestry(as are many in the South, especially in the Carolinas, and near the Appalachian areas).Hedy Lamarr was Austrian(I've read that she may have had some Jewish blood, but I don't know). Her first husband was pro-Nazi(she divorced him). Tallulah Bankhead has been paired with every other female in Hollywood, I tend to discount a lot of it-she would have had to have been three women to be with everyone she is said have been with, lol. sandykaypax
I've never heard about Lena and Ava being lovers. Of course, that doesn't mean it isn't true. However, I have lots of female friends that I refer to as girlfriends and it is not a sexual or romantic term. They are my gal pals, buddies, etc. Maybe Frank didn't like Lena because she was a strong opinionated lady. Maybe they just rubbed each other the wrong way. Maybe he was jealous as men and women often are of people who are good friends with their lovers. Maybe he tried to flirt with her and she wasn't interested. Who knows? im2yar4u
I recently read "Ava, My Story". I didn't notice anything about Lena, but one thing I did notice in there was the remarkable relationships she had with the men in her life, and the things she put up with. At one juncture she had a row with George C Scott, she was hit, and had an eye injury that detached her retina and more. Personally, every time I see Mr. Old George C, I get irritated and tell my kiddos or anyone else who happens to be in the room what I read about the ol' S.O.B. To be fair, I also tell them that he's a fine actor, and that perhaps it was an aberration in behavior, but that the actors we see on screen are people with lives far outside the roles they portray. Who knows.. maybe it's a good lesson.. but I've still not liked him since
daddysprimadonna
Ava was such a beautiful and spirited lady-I read a story about how when they were filming "Night Of The Iguana",she used to water-ski across shark-infested waters over to where the filming was. I guess after George C Scott, a few sharks didn't faze her!
flickerknickers
If any of you are ever around Smithfield, N.C.,you absolutely must make a stop at the Ava Gardner Museum. Ava's hometown is like something out of "To Kill a Mockingbird" or a Truman Capote story but the museum is wonderfully put together. You see Ava's costumes from "The Barefoot Contessa," "Snows of Kilimanjaro", etc. You also see her school yearbooks, make-up kits, etc. There's a 20 minute video tribute to her before you see the museum and now and then Ava's relatives drop by. i've talked to several people who worked with Ava on several of her movies and they said she was a true natural beauty who didn't even use make-up in many of her scenes. They all agreed: Ava was way ahead of her time in being a liberated gal who loved drinking, loving and fighting. That's why MGM mogul Louis B. Mayer was scared to death of her. daddysprimadonna
Heh heh, that's funny, that Louis B was afraid of her-what justice, after all those other actresses he intimidated! LOL! I'd love to see that museum,in fact, the town sounds pretty interesting:)
