Please name the film

Steve McQueen was the director's first choice for this film. Although McQueen was impressed with the script, he felt he was not specifically right for the role as he was unable to cry on cue. Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, and Gene Hackman turned down the part as well. Jack Nicholson turned it down because of scheduling conflicts. The director explained that while filming another of my films, "(lead actor) talked me into casting him. He listened to about 155-days worth of this film. He even contributed ideas." (lead actor) reflected, "I launched myself into a campaign to get the part. I would walk by the director's office and say stuff like 'Al Pacino has no sense of humor' or 'Jack Nicholson is too crazy'. I eventually convinced him to cast me."

Thanks...

In 1959, according to her autobiography, this actress was talking with Kay Kendall in London when Kay said something about seeing her doctor and thinking that "she bought the building". Months later, after the actress went back to the states, she found out that Kay had indeed bought the building...

Question: Who was the actress and what does the English phrase "buying the building" mean ?

That is correct. The phrase is very similar to "buy the farm"...But who was the actress Kay Kendall was talking to ?

Clue:... At that time, the actress' husband "bought the farm" two years before, and for awhile she and Frank Sinatra were an item...

Sorry, no.

They are now living in NYC. The male lead was originally from Cincinnati, and the female lead was originally from Pittsburgh.
