GENERAL TRIVIA QUESTION THREAD

I am not 100% sure about the lawsuit angle, but mobster Crazy Joe Gallo did not approve of the character based on him in The Gang that Couldn't Shoot Straight by Jimmy Breslin. Crazy Joe got "whacked" not too long after the movie came out. This probably isn't the right answer, but all this Godfather stuff has me locked onto one genre.

That was an excellent question, Lavenderblue.

Here's a lighter topic, and possibly easy question.

This light, period-piece sports flick's lead male character is believed to be based on a composite of two of the sport's all-time greats-- one more directly than the other, but both certainly had an influence. Name the film, character, and the two real athletes.

It's "A League Of Their Own".  Tom Hanks' character, Jimmy Dugan, was supposed to be a composite of Jimmy Foxx and Hack Wilson.

Another baseball movie, "The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars And Motor Kings", had a character named "Esquire Joe", played by Stan Shaw.  That character was supposed to be a composite of Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays.

Absolutely correct on all accounts, Miles.  Foxx and Wilson, two of the greatest hitters of their time, like so many of that era, died penniless and way before their time.  Low pay, no pensions, little education, and hard living provided few options but a pauper's grave after one's playing days.  Tragic.  Today's spoiled primadonna players ought to read up on some of their predecessors to appreciate what they have.

Well done, Miles.  The thread is yours.

Was that by any chance Doris Day?

Yes, it was Doris Day.   Doris Day later had her legs injured in a car accident, so she gave up the idea of being a dancer and concentrated on a singing career.  Of course, she still did lots of dancing in her early movies.  You're up, Starlit.

This actress’s second husband was a writer/producer.  After they divorced, he became the second husband of another actress who, it has been said, the first actress bore a striking resemblance to once she changed her hair color.

Name the 2 actresses and the writer/producer they were both married to at one time.

Hedy Lamarr and Joan Bennett were both married to writer/producer Gene Markey. Joan and Constance Bennett were sisters and Joan who was a natural blonde became a brunette and was sometimes compared to Hedy ???

Thanks, Lav.  Today, July 3rd, marks the anniversary of the end of the three day battle of Gettysburg in 1863.  On the second day, the Union stemmed the tide of battle by defending their left flank from attack.  This incident was depicted in the movie "Gettysburg" (1993).  What was that battle known as and who played the officer leading the Union troops to victory that day?

I hope everyone has a happy and healthy holiday weekend!

Well Miles, we ran very similar posts. You have Gettysburg's 2nd day, I did Gettysburg's first day. Are you looking for Tom Berenger as Lt Gen James Longstreet at the Battle of Little Round Top?

I did What Do They Have in Common on Jul 1st. Can you fill in the blanks for me? It shouldn't take long. You already have the answers. :)

You got it, Edythe.  I've been to Gettysburg and know a bit about the battle.  The movie was filmed there and the Battle Of Little Round Top was filmed on the exact location of the original battle.  They used thousands of Civil War re-enacters, many of whom provided their own uniforms and equipment.  It's your turn now, Edy.  Happy Fourth of July!
