cujas
And I've got to add that Barbara Hale got the job of Della Street at Gail Patrick's shop. Barbara had the idea of marketing movie star dolls and was trying to sell it to Gail Patrick. Instead, Gail cast her for the role of Della Street, right there. They didn't have the role cast yet because Erle Stanley Gardner was insisting on Gail for the part. Finance is next up---
DownGoesFrazier
Betty Hutton was scheduled to play the role in ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS that was ultimately played by Doris Day. Hutton had to drop out. Since she was an established film star, what happened after Hutton dropped out which gave supporters of Doris, a band singer with no acting experience, the belief that she could have a realistic chance of getting the role? cujas
Betty Hutton, a Vincent Lopez band singer, had done the same thing--i.e. with *Annie, Get Your Gun*?

DownGoesFrazier
No. The key to what happened was another person who was considered for the role after Betty Hutton dropped out.
mudskipper
Betty Hutton dropped out of the Georgia Garrett role because of pregnancy. Judy Garland was considered for the role, but MGM did not give her permission to work for another studio. Sammy Cahn then asked Doris Day to sing "Embraceable You" during a party in which she was seen by Michael Curtis, the director. At that time, according to her biography, her marriage to her second husband, musician George Weidler, was ending. Her sad and emotional rendition impressed Curtis who gave her the part.... DownGoesFrazier
Sorry, ms. You are missing a key part of the scenario. It involves somebody else being considered for the part Edited by: finance on Jul 21, 2010 10:48 AM
mudskipper
They also considered Jane Powell for the part. I don't know if she declined or was not allowed by her studio...
DownGoesFrazier
Still not there. It is a big leap from a Betty Hutton or Judy Garland to someone who has never acted. Why were Doris' supporters confident that the producers could be convinced to make that leap?

DownGoesFrazier
OK, here's a good hint: The person who is the key to the correct answer is a relative of a person who has already been mentioned.
DownGoesFrazier
OK, let's finish this one off.... When Betty Hutton dropped out of ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS, word leaked out of WB that her sister Marian was being considered for the role. Marian Hutton was a band singer with little or no film experience, like Doris. Word also leaked out that WB was thinking that an actress unfamiliar to audiences might be better for a role that called for a naive, innocent female. With these developments, Doris' supporters figured that SHE should have a good shot at the role......ms, you may have this thread, since you worked hard on the answer. mudskipper
No. Not William Wyler. This director used to be an actor and was married to a lady named Hedda for fifty years. He also had an affair with Rita Hayworth....and he lived less than a month of being a hundred years old....Bette Davis was one of the two actresses..
