cujas
And away we go! "We're not married"-- The late '30's, "Photoplay" Mag is read by every movie fan. Usually full of studio publicity, it hits on a hot/sexy topic for once. This article becomes so hot it propels three couples to get married. One couple declines. Basically, article has a sweet foundation--think of all the happiness that William Powell missed because he waited to marry Jean Harlow--then it was too late. The article outlines several couples who do "everything" together but who aren't married. It all sounds so innocent, or does it? They spell it out for the public. Result--studios get up in arms--three couples are forced to the altar. But a 4th couple is above the fray and never get married. Your Mission: Name the three couples who married and of course, the one couple who refused. This is not about obscure actors-- but, like Powell and Harlow, these people were Movie Stars at the Top of their Profession in 1939. cujas
Of the 4 couples--1 was not beholden to a studio, so they did not get married at all. 2 of couples--the men were controlled by a studio so they were married in 1939. The last couple had a little more freedom, but worked within the studio system--they got married in 1942.

cujas
Remember it's 1939 and the one of the males in a couple had a lot in common with Clark Gable.--Also everybody is an actor or actress.
mudskipper
Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck...?
cujas
Yes--both Taylor and Gable had MGM contracts and were forced to wed or cease relations. Both wed in 1939. I'll give you the 3rd one if you can give me the couple who didn't have to wed. A consolation present for that lady was a $75,000 necklace in 1939. So her boyfriend was exceedingly wealthy, maybe wealthy enough to own his own studio.
cujas
Re: the couple who never wed--he was a movie icon and she was a popular star who appeared in a variety of genres--comedy, adventure, westerns and even the musical.
cujas
So in 1939 MGM forced Clark Gable and Carole Lombard && Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck to get married because of the movie mag article. A 3rd couple had a little more artistic freedom, but were still beholden to the studios for work and they married in 1941. She was, as they say, a Big Star, while he was, maybe, the fastest rising Latin Lover of the time. 4th couple--She was a star and quite popular, even one of the candidateds for GWTW. It was said that Selznick passed her over because she was living with an actor sans matrimony. Her boyfriend was so big he had his own studio; thus he could do whatever he wanted. cujas
Yes sir, Mr. 6. Why else would you give a woman a yacht and a $75,000 necklace. (Lombard only got a $7,500 bracelet--but she had the marriage license!) The Other Couple was the Glamourous Miss Constance Bennett and Latin Lover Gilbert Roland--wed in '41. Goddard famously got "divorced" twice, once in Mexico. But no one ever could find a record of her marriage to Chaplin. This question was so big, that we have 2 winners, but Mr. Mudskipper did most of the dectective work and got 2 of the coulples. So Mr. 6 gets the "Little Tramp" Consolation Reward.
