MilesArcher
Very good, Dan. "Summer Holiday" was just shown on TCM a few days ago. I think what hurt the movie was that the songs were not that memorable or catchy. The movie was actually made in 1946, but not released until 1948. Possibly MGM had an idea that it wasn't going to be a big hit. By the way, Mickey Rooney will celebrate his 90th birthday next week on September 23rd. Your turn, Dan. daneldorado
Thanks, Miles. Name the famous film that begins with an aviator -- a national hero -- returning from a record-breaking flight... but instead of feeling triumphant, he feels depressed. There is nothing physically wrong with him, or with his plane. He's so upset over _something_ _else_, he literally cannot rejoice over his record-breaking feat. Name the film, and name the actor who plays the aviator. Cheers, Dan

daneldorado
Nobody seems much interested in this famous film, so I'll add another clue: The lead actor plays a man who is seemingly obsessed with mechanical toys and contraptions. The rest of the question: Name the famous film that begins with an aviator -- a national hero -- returning from a record-breaking flight... but instead of feeling triumphant, he feels depressed. There is nothing physically wrong with him, or with his plane. He's so upset over _something_ _else_, he literally cannot rejoice over his record-breaking feat. mudskipper
Dan, the only movie toymakers I know are Caractacus Potts from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" ( By the way, Dick Van Dyke is 83 or 84 years old now can you imagine? He is actually a few months older than Lionel Jeffries, the man who played his father in the movie..) and the Toymaker (Ed Wynn) from "Babes in Toyland", but I know they're not the answer....Is this an obscure movie or a popular one ?... Sorry, I just noticed the word "famous" in your last post... Edited by: mudskipper on Sep 23, 2010 9:04 PM

Thanks, ski, for replying. You're right, the movie in question is very famous. And I believe I said that "the lead actor plays a man who is seemingly obsessed with mechanical toys and contraptions." I don't think I said he MAKES toys, he just likes to play with them. In one scene from the movie in question, he displays some of his mechanical toys for his visitors. What is the movie? DownGoesFrazier
Ginger was one of the stars of "Girl Crazy" on Broadway in 1930. Fred was brought in to help stage one of the dance numbers.

DownGoesFrazier
The novel, "An American Tragedy" was turned into a movie as A PLACE IN THE SUN. Why was the name changed?
cujas
There was already a movie made based on the novel. Stevens wanted a new approach with a more positive title.
DownGoesFrazier
No. You have to know something about the book's author. Edited by: finance on Sep 28, 2010 5:09 PM

cujas
Well, I have a degree in French Literature not American Literature, so I'm don't know much about Theodore Dreiser. But I dare say that in his works there seems to be a promotion of the Soviet Union. When Stevens was going to make a movie adapted from *An American Tragedy*, it was around the time of McCarthyism, blacklisting and all that. Perhaps, he used a different title to not attract attention to the work as being associated with Dreiser in 1951. So if I'm correct, thanx for the hints. cujas
Fi, I'm curious--are you a literati interested in the naturalist school of literature or did you get this question from a book on Stevens or the blacklist? In Fre Lit we would compare Dreiser to Zola's type of literature. I'll be back with another question pronto! DownGoesFrazier
Much less intellectual. I got it from Shelley's autobio. Be prepared for more Shelley-related questions.
