cotabluew2
This one is 1930's,no big stars I can remember. It has a little old lady and she is poor and sells apples. She has a daughter who she hasnt seen since she was a baby, who thinks she is rich. She hears the daughter is coming to visit, and gets help from a lot of friends, gangster types maybe? who give her a makeover, lend her a fancy apartment and friends, and the daughter comes and everything is OK. Ring any bells?
stellabluegrl
Might be "Lady For A Day" (1933) starring Warren William & May Robson. Summary: May Robson is an old, apple seller in Times Square in this Damon Runyon tale, and she knows how to extract money from the other peddlers. She sends it to her daughter in Spain, implying she is wealthy in her letters to the daughter. Now the daughter is visiting, and Apple Annie needs help, so she goes to gambler Dave the Dude (Warren William) to set her up for the visit. Now the fun begins. Good flick. Sequel: "Lady By Choice." Capra remade the story in 1961 as "Pocketful of Miracles."
