The Annual FrankGrimes Torture Thread

I hate to bring up a potentially sore subject ;-) but are some of our faves doing a lot of time over at that other place, the Oasis. I don't fault them, I love them wherever they are, but how about a hello once in a while. :-) The new software might be a factor as well. I think we lost a few overall in TCM Land here due to that.

And as Ro says, there's pizza down in Western Rambles, Genre Thread way down there in the hinterlands, where a discussion of Stagecoach, a flick almost everyone loves, is in the nascent stages ... so there is time to view and mull over, then to come on down and start airing those views ...the more the merrier (to coin a phrase) ... meanwhile, there's a full campfire and great pizza, not exactly fare that one might see on the range, but heck we're not on the range (when it comes to food anyway)

:P

---

Several of us live in both places. I like to check this thread and the various Rambles threads as that is where I find those I know the best. As far as Scott goes he must be on one of his movie watching missions. He is making up his next list for us to start on.

P.S. I don't think it is a sore subject.  (I hate the new layout here.)

Janie might be a fairy princess next to you

HA! I will take that as a compliment.. and you are likely right. (she is probably like a walk in the park, compared to me! ) :D

I'm curious too. We need to find this out

Thanks for the suggestion.. I never thought of that before, (ha.. I rarely ever go into that thread because usually.. ha.. I don't know much.. so I wouldn't have any answers for anybody about their questions.. and any questions that I have myself.. I just bug all my friends to answer for me..HA!) I may give it a try. Would be fun to find out if it is from a movie.. or just some publicity still.. or what. It doesn't look like any character I can remember from any of the movies I have seen her in.. but I confess.. I have not seen them all. (and if if it IS from a film I know.. I might not have made the association to the picture)

now that I know you really like Janey, she doesn't look so mean. She looks like she knows her way around that kitchen too. If she's a master cuisiniere like you are,

Ha..You are too kind to me. I am no "cuisiniere" ha, But I haven't killed anyone with my cooking yet.. (that I know of) :D And funny you say all that.. because with all this talk of food, THAT is probably why Mr. Grey has been in hiding. ha. (he is AFRAID of my cooking.. just ask him!) :D But hey.. what can you expect from a guy who only eats Sawdust and Saur Kraut (and likes it!) :P

stupid ole pirate dude

Au contraire mon frere!! No such thing. You are about as "unstupid" a pirate as any I have ever encountered..ha. Not that I have encountered any other pirates.. but if I HAD.. you would not be among the stupid ones! :D

The Movieman says: as far as Scott goes he must be on one of his movie watching missions. He is making up his next list for us to start on.

I hope so! I wonder what number he is up to these days? Will hope he has seen at least a few films I have watched this time.. but either way, he always puts out a good list!

And PS: Mr Movieman.. always happy to be seeing your name popping up here, sir. (Are  you going to stop by Westerns to chat with us on Stagecoach and leave me a pizza order??)

Meanwhile.. Laffite says: I'll pray for this Grey Guy you keep referring to

Be sure to do that.. That way we'll both be praying for him. :)

I spent a good 30-45 minutes last night trying to uncover the mystery, no luck. I typed movies into the search engine sometimes with "images for ..." alongside, I put her name and then "images for ..." I came tantalizing close (or thought so) when your avatar picture came up. I clicked on it and it took me some sight where the picture had been posted but no commentary. She looks younger rather than older in that picture, I'm guessing it's a movie from the 30s, what do you think? We've got to find this out, grrrr.

I'm sure you have made people very happy with your cooking. I should say that IMO mothers are far and away the best cooks in the world. Forget the chefs, gimme mom, she knows! You are 'cuisiniere" I'm sure of it.

:)

O good, a new list, hopefully the kind where he includes a capsule review.

:)

Ha..evidently you and I have way too much time on our hands because I have tried that a couple of times myself. (hey! Inquiring minds wanna know, ha) :) I once even went through a whole list of "Real McCoy's" youtubes (the old TV series with Walter Brennan) because I saw somewhere in one of her filmography lists that she was on a couple of episodes, so I thought.. hmm.. maybe! (but no luck finding the right episodes on youtube, alas) ha.

You are right that she does look a bit  younger. My guess (based on how she looked in other films) would be late 30's or somewhere in the 40's. But to be honest.. she often played a lot of 'older grumpy-looking" characters.. ha. So it could be hard to set an age for her just on looks alone: Here is a pic of her in The Grapes of Wrath.. (1940)

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8_ENa7sVpug/S3n8DAIdDSI/AAAAAAAAK4g/P0Mdykw12TY/s1600-h/JD-janedarwell-grapeswrath-aintnofa.png

And just one year later, she was made up to look older (at least she looks older to me), in The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941)

https://dcairns.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/vlcsnap-88386.png?w=300&h=225

So I don't know if it is pre-or post 1940,  but I do think it might be somewhere around the 40's.. she did have a lot of TV roles too.. but those came much later.. so I would think she'd be too young in the photo for it to be TV.. ha.. but I confess.. I am no expert (on age.. OR Jane Darwell's films/tv appearance)

Whatever the picture is from.. I am thinking it is one of her lesser-known roles.. but it MIGHT even just be a publicity pic. Ha.. my goodness me.. this has turned into quite the mystery, hasn't it! :D

I'm sure you have made people very happy with your cooking. I should say that IMO mothers are far and away the best cooks in the world. Forget the chefs, gimme mom, she knows! You are 'cuisiniere" I'm sure of it.

Well, thanks for saying all that. ha. I do have to say, that I am  no fancy chef, but just very much a "mom-style" cook. ha. If you sit down at our table,  you won't leave  hungry (unless you just don't eat. ha) I like to make big family style meals (I guess it came from when I was a kid and having 3 younger brothers. My mom taught me to cook that way because she had quite a crowd to feed, ha) I am pretty "midwestern" too.. so a lot of my recipes would be stuff you would expect from a "small town" cafe sort of menu. ha. Chicken casserole, beef stew, fried chicken, meatloaf, lasagna.. you know.. very "stick to your ribs" (ha.. and hips too, I am sure) kinda stuff. :D

O good, a new list, hopefully the kind where he includes a capsule review

I like it when he does that.. that way I can read WHY he liked a film as much as how he liked it. It's always a fun read, even if I haven't seen too many of the ones on his list. :)

This will be got to the bottom to (is that a sentence?). Not only do inquiring minds want to know, but un-inquiring minds (like mine).

Please let me know when you open Ro's Diner. I don't care if it's in Timbuktu, I'll catch the first plane.

I usually haven't. I wonder how maddeningly presumptuous it would be to present him with a list of movies I have seen. I doubt he (or anyone) would appreciate getting homework assignments like that.

:P

Ha! It is now! :P

I posted an inquiry down in that "Information" forum. Will hope some of those "super-sleuths" you mentioned can solve the mystery for us.

Ha.. well, alas, I am afraid I am getting to old to start any new business ventures of that nature now. but someday if we ever have that "TCM Family reunion that a few of us Rambler-folk have joked about.. we'll be sure to put you on the list to "come on down" ha. I l seem to be "in the middle" between all you eastern/western folks. (geographically speaking) ha. I always joke that I am "the cheese" in our East Coast/West Coast sandwich. ha. So KC would be a good half-way point for everyone to "reunion-ize' ha. (is THAT a sentence??) :D

We'll have plenty of home-cooking to sample (I think Miss G said she'd even bring her world famous German potato salad!) I bet we could have a nice outdoor picnic before our "Ford-film-fest" extravaganza. ha. (because hey, we can't be having a family reunion without some "home movies' ha. I have a very tiny house.. but a pretty big back yard. We could have quite the "family shin-dig" to be sure. ha. :D

Well.. Pirate Guy.. it is "got to the bottom to" at last! ha :D Woo hoo!  Thanks to your suggestion and to Mr. SCSU (or is that Professor SCSU?) Anyway.. he posted the answer for us quick as could be. (woo hoo!) The pic is from McFadden's Flats (1935) So good eye on calling it as a "1930's" look for her. And thanks for the tip on using that forum. I would have never thought of it.

May I just say... WOWSA!

If you guys send him a message, he might just answer you. Who knows? He is floating around, kind of like a ghost. :P :p

Maybe we need to coax him back here, guys. I don't know, I'm thinking we need to set a trap with strawberry cheesecake. Maybe throw a tea party, so he will think he needs to crash it and steal something... Then, BAM, we catch him! Heehee! Then I can get out my long black gloves and strangle him for leaving us for such a long period of time...Oopsey, did that get typed? :D :D

Let's talk about religious symbolism in classic film, or perhaps our favorite Lassie Greer Garson movies? McLintock anyone? Wagon Master? How about all four?

:D  I can't believe you remembered the Lassie reference!  I completely forgot about that one.
