visualfeast
FARMER, FRANCES...Free thinking, isolationist movie star of the thirties. The product of a strange family dynamic; a manipulative and strong mother and a loving but emotionally weak father. She started her career on the stage, where she was all set to star in Golden Boy, written by her paramour, Clifford Odets. When his wife returned from Europe, she demanded the role, and Frances was out, so she beat it to Hollywood, where she was a sensation in her first few films. The Hollywood "life" didn't set well with her, and when she made it well known her disdain for it and most of the folks who were addicted to it, she was publicly denounced as a madwoman. After a few more years of fighting the system, the powers that be, with the help of her mother got her admitted to a mental institution, where she languished for many painful years, undergoing shock therapy and a prefrontal lobotomy. She was released in the late forties and took any work she could find (for a time, as a night clerk at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. As if her life hadn't been sufficiently destroyed by those she trusted, in the early fifties, she was a featured celebrity on the TV show THIS IS YOUR LIFE, allowing her to once again humiliate herself publicly. She was talented and beautiful (just watch SON OF FURY...the scene with the pearls), and because she didn't accept a ready-made lifestyle, she was destroyed. Certainly one of Hollywood's darker shameful secrets.

He was also the brother of fellow stooges Moe Howard and Curly Howard. During the early 1940s, when his solo career was at its height and he was a contract player at Universal Studios, appearing with everyone from Abbott and Costello to W.C. Fields to John Wayne, he was promoted as "The Ugliest Man in the Movies". After Curly had his stroke, Shemp was brought back, with Curly's blessing, to be a stopgap until Curly got better. Sad to say, Curly never got well enough to continue, so Shemp stayed with the Stooges until he died.
