kas_to
does anyone know why she put her lipstick on that way just straight across along the top lip? I know it is a little thing but I feel it really looked bad she didn't do this in the earlier days
TriciaNY
I agree. But then again I really don't like to look at her. lol. I asked my Aunt age 86 and she said they wanted their lips to appear bigger then. Susan Lucci used to do it in the 70's too.
tobitz
Thanks for the explanation including Susan Lucci. I've always thought it looked bad, and had no idea why it was done.
rainingviolets21
I know why it was done, when Bette started her film career the fan magazines noticed her resemblence to Constance Bennett, so Bette decided to take the bow out of her lips and made a line straight across and go over her natural lipline, there are two movies where she shows her real mouth, they are, In This Our Life and The Little Foxes, in her later career her over-rouged mouth became her trademark.... CineSage_jr
Lipstick applied beyond the lipline to re-shape a mouth...yuk.
Birdgirl
How about Lucille Ball? I love Lucy, but she went a bit far. I think Joan Crawford did too, more so than Bette.
hamradio
You have raised an interesting subject on the over use of makeup on some stars. I have a movie called "The Family Secret" - 1924 and the man, Edward Earle is the best example of the subject. The studio applied WAY TOO MUCH pancake makeup on his face. He actually looks like a ghost in the movie. Any thoughts? I don't know whats worst, making a silent star look like Casper or making Bette Davis look like Mik Jagger (a little pun). rainingviolets21
Talk about lipstick over the lipline, did anyone notice Dolly Parton's lips on American Idol? she painted her mouth to look like a clown, Joan Crawford had what they called the Crawford Shmear, lipstick well over the lipline, and many stars copied that look... hamradio
That sounds like a cast lineup for "The Rocky Horror Show"
InFlynn
Just imagine what those lips might have looked like if botox was available back in the day.
CineSage_jr
Or, just imagine what the dialogue in ENSIGN PULVER, the ill-conceived "sequel" to MISTER ROBERTS, with Robert Walker, jr and Burl Ives, might have been like when the former spoke about the captain's (Ives) being shot in his BYEW-tocks.
