Hey All,

Amazing..i just finished watching the documentary here on TCM on Charlie...it was GREAT..I mean TCM really knows how to do a FULL documentary on someones life..from beggining to end!! All the way...i must be honest i never really appreciated or watched Charlie Chaplins work..TILL now....this man was a genius a master at his craft! From the physical comedy to his actual acting...i have to say as well i watched talking picture i had ever seen with Charlie today....Limelight! with the BEAUTIFUL Claire Bloom...well it knocked me out...what a BEAUTIFUL movie...and Charlie made me cry...for real...i was soooooo moved....just in AWE of this man....i like when the host (sydney Pollack)said that with all his flaws it just meant he was human....a gentle soul always...

Just want to say Thank you again TCM for showing me something i never would have known or appreciated if it hadnt been for your channel...

Ty again,

AvaG :-)

Yes, I love that movie. It's so beautiful.

I missed the documentary. I had to go out of town for the day. Did it say what Charlie's "flaws" were? They were quick to talk about Joan Crawford's "flaws", what about Charlie's "flaws"?

I really don't want to know of Charlie's flaws, but I wonder if the doc mentioned them?

Fred,

of all ppl i cant belive that u brought that up..Joan...well put it this way what they were saying is were ALL flawed...we dont BEAT the heck out of our kids and torture them....no he didnt do that from what his kids said from what his freinds said..NOTHING but praise.... He drank, he had his own normal demons, growing old, scared these kinds of things....he didnt intentionally hurt other ppl....UNDERSTAND...like his OWN children...They had 3 of his children speaking and not 1 of them a bad word..not 1..actally not 1 bad word from anyone except that he had affiars and liked young girls......All they said was how kind and GENTLE he was..TOTALLY diffrent from how they talked about Joan..she was NOT a sympethetic person AT ALL.... in life period to anyone...And Fred arent u the one who said to me They have been saying these things about Joan for years?

Anyway to bad u missed it it was great..but i have to say i am shocked at u Fred., but i know better now.....thats all im going to say... see u just never know over the internet...hmmmmm

Ty again TCM..the documentary was fantastic, for such a beloved and gentle man!

Not one of Chaplins Many, I mean Many, children even "boo'd" that Uncle Charlie was a bad guy. But, if it's dirt you like, ask Uncle Sam. He hated Charlie.

Man, I could go on and on and on.

Want dirt?. He was certainly a Socialist. Made movies that propagated his political "bents".

The red flag in "Modern Times". How 'bout that speech at the end of "Verdoux"?

An executable offense I'm sure, by some.

Ahhhhh, who cares. Besides me.

>The red flag in "Modern Times".

That was so danged funny!! That's my kind of luck. Charlie sees a red warning flag fall of the rear of a big flatbed cargo truck driving on a city street. He runs out and picks it up and waves it in the air and yells at the truck driver to let him know he lost his red flag. Just at that moment, 500 Communists turn the corner behind him in a protest march. The cops run up and see Charlie at the head of the group, and he's waving a big red flag and yelling. Lol!

Everyone,

Why in the Devil doesn't TCM ever run CITY LIGHTS anymore? It is far and away Chaplin's finest work, and it hasn't been badly re-edited like most of his other movies have been either! It was also his own personal favorite among all the films that He ever made!

CITY LIGHTS is one of the greatest movies of all time, and I always thought it would be the very first Silent shown on the Essentials, but it wasn't it was Keaton's STEAMBOAT BILL JUNIOR a few years back.

AvaG92260,

CITY LIGHTS is on DVD, so it is easy enough to buy a copy. In-fact it has been released twice on DVD, but the Image version with the Alternate Carl Davis re-scoring of Chaplin's score, is out of print. The Warner's DVD though is still around. I hope that you will pick it up.

While I like the Richard Schickel documentary from 2004, by far the best documentary ever made on the Man is Kevin Brownlow, and David Gill's Three part UNKNOWN CHAPLIN produced for Thames Television in Britain in 1983. And it is also on DVD from A&E Home Video. Once you see this incredible 3 part Docu-Series, you will become a huge Chaplin fan, and I dare say budding Silent film fan as well!

It's just to bad that the brilliant series that proceeded UNKNOWN CHAPLIN Brownlow, and Gill's 13 Part HOLLYWOOD, is still not commercially available. Though I have this on DVD-R from the early 90's Laser-disc release.

Like to add one to the list, a Charlie Chaplin short called "Behind the Screen" 1916

Amazed by the razor sharp clarity of the movie "The Kid" which I saw last year. Jackie Coogans "The Ragman" is equally clear. Loved the music score by Linda Martinez.

Still blows my mind thats "Uncle Festor". LOL.
