BREAKING: Baltimore protesters have pulled down a statue of Christopher Columbus

and thrown it into the city's Inner Harbor.

On statue removal, I'm in the same place as the overwhelming majority of Americans: statues of figures that don't embody our values
should be removed from their perches on public land via legal process
and put in appropriate museums.

There is no reason to destroy public property.

but gotta admit my 1st reaction on hearing this was laughter

.........PS10/ Maybe criminal action is being used to throw statues into harbors because it's easier than tackling the systemic problems that have made it so hard to remove these statues via regular order. Maybe a plan to change the system is more urgent than a plan to change the scenery............

....CONCLUSION/ We live in a nation where half the people vote, yet we're saying, in some instances, throwing a statue in a harbor is the only way to get things done.
I think we should check back in on that theory when we have 100% voting participation by those of us who want change.......

Amen.  If all the protesters and their supporters and the Democrats would vote and get others to vote, then the white racist Republicans would no longer be in control of the states and federal government.  Also need to work on overturning voter suppression by filing more court cases and continuously forcing the issue.

Federal officers are using unmarked cars to arrest Portland protesters

According to reports, peaceful protesters have been detained with no warning or explanations since at least 14 July

"..........Anti-racism protests have taken place for nearly two months in Portland, since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on 25 May.

During a visit to Portland earlier on Thursday, Chad Wolf, the acting homeland security secretary, said state and city authorities were to blame for not putting an end to the protests, angering local officials.

Wolf characterized the protests in a tweet, claiming: “The city of Portland has been under siege for 47 days straight by a violent mob while local political leaders refuse to restore order to protect their city. @DHSgov stands ready to assist to bring this violent activity to an end.”............

interviews with protesters showed that “officers are also detaining people on Portland streets who aren’t near federal property, nor is it clear that all of the people being arrested have engaged in criminal activity. [Two demonstrators] said they think they were targeted by federal officers for simply wearing black clothing in the area of the demonstration.”

The news organisation also reported that federal officers “left one demonstrator hospitalized with skull fractures after shooting him in the face with so-called ‘less lethal’ munitions July 11”............

That’s a Navy man for you!

Question is...WHY  is this non violent protester being hit with a club and tear gas?!

===============================================

There is alot of armed Feds in this footage.
But there is only one American soldier.
Soldier for us all, defending our freedom.

This guy has more courage in his left leg, the one being clubbed,
than all those wannabes in camo.

Thanks, I forwarded it to a Trump supporter who was talking with me about it last night.  Maybe this will help him understand that Trump created the increase in activity by sending in the federal police.  Then the federal police greatly expanded the scope of their activities.

To me, the key elements are that neither the mayor nor the governor requested federal assistance AND the federal police are going far beyond protecting federal property or employees.

-& BROKE the fingers of a NON-violent Navy vet protestor........

The fact that we haven’t heard that every officer involved in this incident has been removed from duty

tells you everything you need to know about the lawlessness and lack of legitimacy of DHS’s presence in Portland....

DHS Authorizes Domestic Surveillance to Protect Statues and Monuments

https://www.lawfareblog.com/dhs-authorizes-domestic-surveillance-protect-statues-and-monuments

=========================================

An internal DHS memo authorizes intelligence collection of Americans in order to protect ... statues and memorials.

As we explain, the justifications for such surveillance are equal parts unpersuasive and really alarming:

Neither side is backing down as federal agents and protesters clash in Portland

".........Ahead of the July Fourth weekend, the Trump administration dispatched teams of federal agents to the city as part of an effort to guard federal monuments. The President says federal resources were sent to protect federal property from destruction, but protesters say it is the large increase in federal forces that continues to fuel their anger.

An endless cycle

While protests during the daylight hours have been overwhelmingly peaceful -- marked by marches, unity gatherings, and even the singing of songs -- clashes at night between some protesters and federal officers have resulted in the repeated vandalism of the US courthouse in downtown Portland and the tear gassing of demonstrators.........

Although the President and senior DHS officials have portrayed Portland as a city under siege, the picture on the ground is markedly different from the image of bedlam they are attempting to project...........

It is unclear how the escalated tensions in Portland will be resolved. With Trump and DHS ratcheting up their heated rhetoric to label protesters, and demonstrators angered and steeled by the caustic descriptions of their movement, no clear path to resolution exists as demonstrators and rioters continue to gather outside the federal courthouse.
"It's ironic that we're getting tear gassed for protesting against aggressive police tactics," said Eric, a protester from Washington State who refused to give his surname for fear of being targeted by authorities.
"We're not leaving," he said. "I think it says more about them than us when the feds respond to our demands for justice with tear gas and smoke bombs."

Do these men even know why they're in Portland?
Wearing camoflage in the middle of a US city?
Or what crimes they're "investigating" with guns drawn?

Or why they can't wear name tapes, insignias or *any* identification?

Or who gave them authority to arrest without probable cause?

Navy vet beaten by federal agents: ‘They came out to fight’

.........Today, David, who suffered two broken bones in his hand, finds himself a reluctant symbol of the protests taking place in Oregon’s largest city and the federal response to it. Militarized officers from a handful of agencies have been using tear gas, flash-bangs, pepper spray, “less-lethal” impact weapons and other munitions to disperse crowds.

“It isn’t about me getting beat up. It’s about focusing back on the original intention of all of these protests, which is Black Lives Matter,” David said in a phone interview Monday with The Associated Press........

“What they were doing was unconstitutional,” David said. ”Sometimes I worry that people take the oath of office or the oath to the Constitution, and it’s just a set of words that mean nothing. They really don’t feel in their heart the weight of those words.”

There was no talking. The federal officers, in full tactical gear, came charging out of the federal building.

“They came out in this phalanx, running, and then they plowed into a bunch of protesters in the intersection of the street and knocked them over. They came out to fight,” David said. One officer pointed a semi-automatic weapon at David’s chest, he said, and video shows another shoving him backwards as he tried to talk with the officers.

“I took a couple steps back, straightened up, and then just stood my ground right there, arms down by my side,” David recalled.

One officer began whacking at David with the baton. When he doesn’t fall or even flinch, another officer sprays him full in the face.

One critical issue with what is happening in Portland and will soon happen elsewhere is that the mission of Homeland Security has changed from defending America from terrorism and foreign threats to one of controlling the American people.  Just as in dictatorships.
