democracy, free speech, civility, protest?

Recommended Posts

I am an insomniac, so when I woke up at 3AM and couldn't sleep I thought I would watch a stream of
the protests in Portland. They aren't actually "live stream" but it is several hours worth of Portland protesting
from last night. One set was from the ground. Another seemed to be from a drone. The one on the ground
included one guy from the press.  He was obviously  a newbie because all he had in the way of  protective  gear was your standard mask that you wear in the  age of covid. The protesters had helmets, visors, goggles, gas masks, and some
had shields, alll defensive weapons. They carried lots of water bottles and the most extreme thing
I saw was several US flags hung upside down. Some had signs with Black Lives Matter on them.
In three hours of film I never saw anybody scale a fence, anybody raise a baton, or do anything other
than march and chant. The drone footage showed the massive size of the crowd. If there are trouble makers
in this crowd they have to be somewhere  at around 1%. I never saw any violence by the protesters.

This multi hour viewing experience changed my mind about the protests. I thought they were rioters mainly because of incendiary headlines and isolated scenes on the news of people pulling down fences or just banging a wall with a baton.  There is no need for a military response to this largely peaceful protest for the cause of BLM.

Sorry for the wall of text, just thought I'd let you know what I saw over a long period of time.

Vladimir Putin to help 'ensure security', says Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko

"Putin, has agreed to help to "ensure the security" of the country if needed as thousands of people continue to hold peaceful protests against his rule.

Lukashenko made the comments on Saturday evening, several hours after a phone call with Putin, the first publicly known direct contact between the two leaders since he claimed a landslide victory in an election his opponents said was rigged. ........

.....

The brutal suppression of post-election protests in Belarus has drawn harsh criticism by Western countries and the United Nations. European Union foreign ministers said on Friday that they rejected the election results in Belarus and began drawing up a list of officials in Belarus who could face sanctions for their role in the crackdown.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Saturday that he was glad to see that some protesters in Belarus had been freed but that it was not enough.

He also said the presidential election in Belarus fell short of democratic standards.........

QAnon Supporters May Be Behind Hundreds Of In-Person

‘Save The Children’ Rallies Planned For Saturday

"Supporters and sympathizers of the far-right QAnon conspiracy theory appear to be behind in-person rallies nationwide under the name of a century-old humanitarian organization Save The Children, according to an NBC News report, as concern mounts over the theory’s growing support and burgeoning presence in mainstream politics. ........

According to the NBC News report published Friday, QAnon supporters are increasingly taking the conspiracy theory offline, and appear to have been involved in dozens of in-person rallies over the past few weeks externally protesting child trafficking but also pushing the QAnon theory.

These events are frequently organized under the title “Save the Children,” the name of a century-old charity organization that QAnon supporters and sympathizers have co-opted,

leading Facebook to temporarily disable #SaveTheChildren after it started trending on social media earlier this month.

A First Draft analysis found that QAnon groups accounted for nearly 70% of Facebook’s total interactions on #SaveTheChildren in August and 75% on Instagram, while human trafficking organization workers say they’re receiving an influx of bizarre tips, claims and threats. ...........

Portland protest turns violent as federal police clear plaza

Images showed what appeared to be hundreds of people involved, many of them wearing helmets and carrying makeshift shields.

".......Right-wing groups had announced a rally near the Justice Center Saturday afternoon that quickly drew counter demonstrators. The building houses a police precinct, police headquarters, a county jail and courtrooms and is next door to a federal courthouse that was targeted for weeks last month by left-wing protesters who clashed with federal agents dispatched to Portland to protect it.

The protesters at Saturday's demonstration included the Proud Boys right-wing group and left-wing protest groups Democratic Socialists of America and Popular Mobilization, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported............

The demonstration began at about noon near the Multnomah County Justice Center in Oregon’s biggest city, local media outlets reported. Demonstrators hurled rocks and other items at each other and got into fights. Streets were blocked amid the mayhem.

Images showed what appeared to be hundreds of people involved, many of them wearing helmets and carrying makeshift shields. Some demonstrators appeared to use pepper spray during clashes, and at least one person appeared to pull a gun. No arrests were reported...........

Wow. This is after Lukashenko threatened a military crackdown on protesters.

In the past, Putin would have blamed America for inciting scenes like these.

Trump’s (unfortunate) silence reinforces this movement is organic and these protesters are not going away quietly.

Another example of peaceful protesting, oh the civility.

Guess tearing down statues, renaming schools didn't work.

Allow some reasonable TIME for the law to fire and charge the officer involved. Nope can't do that.

They have had plenty of time to PREVENT the assaults from happening.  If not for videos, the officers would go free with nothing to reflect they did something wrong.  The Blue Wall still exists and is buttressed by the governments that let them get away with it.

They have had "reasonable time," but they need to review all the videos and statements from the officers.  Then leadership meets with attorneys and city/county/state officials to determine what is the LEAST they can do.

A good point was made earlier today on MSNBC about the treatment of Jacob Blake who was shot in the back in front of his kids and the way Kyle Rittenhouse, the 17 year old carrying the machine gun who already killed two people was treated.

How come Rittenhouse was not met with fusillade of bullets?
